Seriously, I think they look cool (the basses more than the guitars, actually).  But I'm not a fan of the sound and I've never even remotely considered buying one. 

A bit like Gretsches really (but I have had a couple of fleeting moments when I've thought about buying a Gretsch).

The guitarist of my second band (the one where I play the bass) just got a 330 fireglo. I only played it a few seconds by the end of our last rehearsal, and it was plugged in a cr@p fender frontman amp so I can't tell much about it so far, except that the neck is thicker than what I remembered.

I've always dreamed of getting myself a 620 jetglo (and of course a 4001 or 4003), but these guitars are still way over my budget :-/

love the basses...like the odd ricky guitar...but ain't got that kinda cash and if did would prob go for a gretsch or handbuilt

yeah, i love the look of them.  i played one years ago, and it was very different to what i was used to.  if they weren't so extraordinarily expensive, i might take a chance on one, but until the lottery win, i'm afraid they'll have to wait.  i would love to see a metal band use one though :)

Yes for sure. I have access to a bass fairly regularly and it is great to play, sounds fantastic and looks damn cool. A former guitarist in the band had one and used it for gigs. I often used to pick it up and played it and loved it. I had a preconception that they have just one usable tone whereas I found that to be not the case at all. I'd been led to beleive that you could not play lead guitar on a Ric ( this one was a 360 I think) and it was actually very nice indeed. If I had the cash spare I am sure I'd have a Ric bass and I would one day like to have a Ric 6 string.

Ricks are very idiosyncratic

They are cool designs and have a singular voice that you either love or hate.

Sometimes the build quality is a bit iffy and I find that their bridges are their weakness (can be a bit rattly or roughly made)
They are one of the guitars that if you had someone make you a copy it might feel more like other guitars , but Rick are very protective over clones and do tend to get litigious on copyists.

I've tried hard to like them, as a few good mates own Ricks, but I honestly can't abide them. They feel all wrong, kind of plastic-y, and the sounds really aren't all that.

I know there's always that thing that the Beatles/Who etc. used them and all, but beyond the 12-string, they all also ditched the Ricks once they earned/found something else.

I really don't like them - looks wise or sound wise. They also seem very expensive for what they are. Perhaps they only seem expensive to me as I don't like them.

A big part of the expense is demand. There's hardly any about, you get quoted 18 months on delivery for guitars as a matter of course...

I've a mate who has a load, mostly old ones, uses a variety of them in our Psychobilly band. They're THE sound for certain things. And pretty honking for everything else.

4001s and 4003s are the business for pretty much everything in the rock field though.
