Orange Rockerverb 100 Opinions
« on: July 30, 2010, 08:45:36 PM »
Got a chance to do a straight swap of my 6505+ for the Rockerverb. Worth it?

Obviously very different amps, but I'm mostly playing doom and sludge live now, and the Orange would suit it better, but I do still need more aggressive tones for my black grind/crust thing.

Essentially, will I be able to manage these types of sounds with the Rockerverb plus an overdrive? (some of the tracks are actually a JTM45 and a fuzz, anyway.

Its been a while since I played one, but I guess you can still get more edge out of the rockerverb with an OD. When I played it I used a TS9 through it as a boost, and as you'd expect it was overdriven marshall general territory and passable for the generic thrash I was playing at the time - should be workable for your mainstay stuff, no?

I reckon so. Probably unlikely to get a shot of one before I need to commit or not, but I reckon it could be a winner. Plus I fancy a change.

It's a cool black tolex one, too. :)

lucky guys over your side of the pond get orange amps cheap enough. at least we get mesa cheaper ;)

if you were happy with JTM tones for your stuff, i think the rockerverb might be a little more raw and less modern than a 6505. more crust to it? i don't quite know how to describe it.

also. black tolex FTW :D

Can't comment on doom and sludge coz I don't play it, but I love my Rockerverb 50. Plenty of gain when the last gain stage kicks in, great crunch, and (this may be of no interest to you) RV's work brilliantly with single coils for clean / light overdrive.

The RV can't compete with Sue's Diezel VH4 for sheer gain, and the VH4 sounds much more contemporary when played side by side. But the RV has character. Of course the problem with character is it may not be one you like.  :?

If you can get a straight swap I think it would be worth it for the experience if nothing else, the RV is a fun amp.

PS. Please don't hate me if you don't like it!

Cheers for the input guys. The chap who was going to swap it isn't likely to anymore sadly, I think he's managed to swing a loaner 6505 from Peavey or something.
