Have you ever considered having a choke fitted to yours? I wonder if it would make a noticeable difference ...

Never really thought about it but I like it as it is. I doubt it would fit though otherwise wouldn't Marshall have installed it originally?

I believe they replace them with various resistors.

I have seen schematics for adding a choke in my tsl and it involves removing something that has been labelled on the schematic as a sag resistor which im very sure isnt the correct name or it.

Never really thought about it but I like it as it is. I doubt it would fit though otherwise wouldn't Marshall have installed it originally? I've heard people say that the 2554 does have a slightly different sound to the others and that it sounds best through a 4 x 12, but I gought mine for small and cramped venues. It's my favorite Marshall without a doubt and it's nice to have as an alternative to the MK50 and Hurricane. I very nearly had a black one too, I was going to run them together as a stack ... but that would have been greedy!  I was playing mine in stereo yesterday with the hurricane and although only low volume, it was great. You could hear the difference between it and the Hurricane but it was a really fat sound, I can see why Bonamassa runs multiple amps. Also as you say it is nice to be able to turn the volume up and get power valves cooking .... and the eq section is easily the best I have used on a Marshall. The strange thing is I had one of these Silver ones 20 years ago and whilst I liked it, it did not sound as good as this one? Yours probably sounds different to mine as the later ones (after seriel number 3000+ I think) are supposed to be a fuller and fatter sounding... I just can't imagine that because this one IS full sounding.

Yeah that is a cool setup indeed. I have to get used to the combo tone vs. my usual 4x12 - it's a different ballgame, but I could imagine that it's fun when that little bugger is cranked with one speaker really working.

I did play the silver one he had there and it had less bottom end than mine - could have been the speaker though. Fact is, basic characteristic was the same and I slightly preferred the tone of the black one.

I played around with 4 cable method and the M13 this morning and it was loads of fun. You know those GnR moments!

But when I plug in direct it's just a more natural tone. Pity they have only one relay bypass on the M13, and you have to go through AD/DA when using 4CM. I went and did the same setup using pedals (a wah, boost, a drive and phaser in front and a delay and volume pedal in the loop) and it had much more punch, though less versatility (and I wouldn't have that Whammy for the RATM cover).

It's a great amp and maybe one of the best grab and go packages available!

You said you use a V30 in it, is it the stock Celestion Vintage speaker or have you replaced it with a new V30?

Mine's an original Silver model (it still has the plastic over the front & rear panels!).   The Sidewinder gives it all the bottom end you would need, while keeping the mids and top sounding very full.  I'm using all Groove Tube valves in it, though the EL34's are about 20 years old now.  I have 2x12AX7M's and their SAG-AX7-MPI for the Phase Invertor.

I put SED =C= EL34s in yesterday, a NOS Mullard in V1, a simple JJ in V2 and a Ruby Highgain+ in the PI. Sounds great now. The old tubes were probably highly regarded old models, but they felt like they've had their best days behind them.

And what the guy paid 80€s for (he showed me the bill) was a badly matched set of EL34STRs with a somehow OK bias job. Those EL34s were like 34mA on one tube and 42mA on the other. I don't know what these shops are doing ...

I just double checked my speaker and it's the same as yours! I thought it was marked V30? No matter, I think it sounds good, I don't find it harsh at all and compared to the mint JCM900 DR that I sold not too long ago it has alot more bottom end. I need to crank it with the 1912 cab connected too just to see if that beefs it up some more? Can I ask how much you got yours for Hunter? I'd still like a black one at some point as I prefer the traditional black/ gold Marshall colours and they are more gig friendly!

depends what value choke you use - a lowish value like 3H will be rawer and more grindy (much like it is now), whereas a higher value one (say 10H) will be cleaner and tighter.  worth trying - chokes ain't very expensive.

I'll play rehearsal with the stock speaker tomorrow, let me see then. So far I really like it and don't see a need to change it. But who knows, the grass is always greener on the other side.

I paid 850€. The times when you got these for 300€ are unfortunately over. I don't mind though, to me it sounds like a million bucks!

I have "upgraded" the interior a bit, a NOS Mullard in V1, a Penta 12AX7M (basically the same GT as in yours) and a perfectly matched and biased pair of =C= EL34s. Ha, it's nice if you got a lot of tubes flying around at home.

Here you can hear the amp through the closed back Marshall 1x12 with a single G12-65 Rola Reissue, it's still a bit stiff sounding, needs some more breaking in to do. (it had an original 80s Rola 12-65, but it's lost its positive edge a bit, too flubby for my taste).
