Quick Wiring Question
« on: August 02, 2010, 07:38:12 AM »
Hi
Pre-wiring 500 pots and .047 caps on 72 Deluxe Tele, waiting for pups.
Two Vol, two Tone, 3-way, just like a LP or SG.
Old pots were 250 and caps were unknown.
I followed a diagram from Seymour Duncan as I have never completely rewired a two vol two tone guitar before, just replaced pups...
So I get done and notice that the diagram shows the tone cap wired to the wiper tab of the pot and B to the vol pot tied to the positive side of the pickup.
Now what I removed has the cap on B and the lead from the vol on the wiper.
My other guitars with single volume and tone also have B to cap, wiper to vol.
Technically it's doing the same thing either way, shunting to ground through the cap, but I was wondering if there is any difference, or why would Seymour Duncan show the connections "backward", or if I should go back and change it the other way around?
Thanks

Not enough schema-reading and electronic 101 skills to tell fore sure, but from what you describe, the SD schema, and this, your previous wiring might be a "50s style" wiring - which indeeds reacts a bit differently.  But you'd better wait until some local wiring guru chimes in !-)

What BigB says - it's modern vs 50s wiring.  Do a search and you'll find it's been discussed on here before...

OK, reading through the other thread, it should make no difference which way through the pot the signal runs, so either way would do exactly the same thing. The difference between vintage and modern would be where the treble bleed circuit is wired to the Vol circuit?

It's all to do with what's parallel to what in the circuit.

50s = brighter as you turn down the volume, interactive volume/tone controls
Modern = darker as you turn down the volume, independent volume/tone controls.

No treble bleed involved here. One of the points of the vintage (aka 50s) wiring - which has the tone cap always in the cricuit - is to avoid the need for a treble bleed. I wouldn't say it "gets brighter as you turn down the volume" - it's actually a bit more complicated - but you definitly have less treble loss and it's more consistent with the "cranked up" tone. OTHO if you roll down the volume when the tone pot is not fully open, there's some kind of oscillation going on at the cutoff frequency that can sound like you have a bit more treble (hence, I guess, Twinfan's descriptions). The results of the vol / tone interaction is a bit less predictable than with the "modern" wiring.

My red Tele - Nailbomb/MQ is wired 50's and I like it. I use my vol a lot to go from mild crunch to full onslaught. Seems to work well.
I'll have to pay attention to the difference with the Wolfgang which is modern.
For now, I'll try the modern as I already pre-wired what I could.
WRHB's are at the Bare Knuckle shop today!
Neck is OFD.
So anyways, do y'all concur that wiper to cap to ground, B to pos on Vol will work the same as;
B to cap to ground, wiper to pos on Vol??
Here's what I got so far following the Seymour Duncan diagram which is different than what I had:
