Best way to achieve metal tones from my orange dual terror?

Right well basically i was up until 3am last night trying to work this out. I love my orange dual terror for it's blues sound and crunch but it has'nt got enough gain for me to play metal which i also love.

Seems like the choices are down to 3 options, although i have no idea which would be better or whether they would work according to the hundreds of threads i read last night.

1. boost the gain channels crunch with a boost pedal like an xotic bb boost or mxr micro amp
This worried me because i am not sure whether it will give me enough gain for the really heavy metal i occasionally like to play.

2. use an overdrive or disortion to boost the gain channel much like the above to achieve the extra gain. Would this even work without making it sound cr@p?

3.Give up and just buy a metally distortion to wack on the clean channel. I am worried by this because i love the tone of the orange and dont want to lose it.


This has been bugging me for months now pretty much since i got my dual terror. i would be more inclined towards the booster or overdrive pedal but would that create a heavy disortion or just a slight gain boost? Ideally i would like it so pinch harmonics jump out.

browse some youtube with tiny terror and metal as keywords, find the rob chappers vid. Hes using an mxr boost with his prs custom and it really smokes ,).

Yeah i saw that actually but it just does'nt have the bass response i was hoping for which is why i thought maybe the xotic boost with the bass eq would help but i think i would still like a bit more gain. Ideally pushing it into mesa boogie dual rectifier gain territory.

well its el 84 powered so it will break up alot sooner. The tiny terror is kinda old fashion made on this point. Dont expect the dual rectifier gain or sound with it even with eq and boost. Those modern gain machines have all in the preamp section with huge poweramps that are made to stay clean and give headroom. The orange terrors are more rock amp made so you can push them hard and enjoy the sound of a tube amp kranked ;).

I wanted to do the same as you as i got nice results in a shop with  boosted tiny terror and a bariton schecter in B but it was more of a heavy rock sound than a chunky metal sound no matter what I was trying ;). If it has an effect loop you could try some of those AMT pedals that can bypass the preamp of your orange amp. Maybe an AMT R1 to emulate some rectifier sound.

Well thats cleared up a lot of stuff thanks, as the dual terror does'nt have an effects loop would a distortion sound alright through the clean channel?

If it does not get too dirty at high volume it will do the trick. But in a band condition i'd say the kranked amp + a boost pedal , xotic or whatsoever would do a good job as you need mids and not so much gain in a band/gig context.

I saw a rock band at a fest this week end and one guy used the tiny terror kranked with just a mic in front of a cab and it really sounded huge.

It's a Tiny Terror. It will always suck at bass response, sorry, but it's not designed as a metal amp. An EQ pedal might be the solution though (if it has an effects loop).

I got one to do metal but was with a ocd, what kind of metal you after sounding like. What guitar pickups etc..and yes what cab speakers you using

I was looking for a bogner style metal sound ideally. Pikcups wise i am currently saving for nailbombs but atm it's some duncan designed pickups which are quite muddy. Cab i'm using is just the 112ppc with the vintage 30 speaker so yeah better bass response might be quite optimistic :/

Running it into a 4X12" cabinet really changes the low-range character of any amp so either that, or a ported cab, would be my port of call but; seeing as you were saving for the new pickups, I wouldn't know what to recommend.

Sell it and replace it with an Engl Gigmaster.

I hate Engl, but for mini amp metal, this is the best option.
