Les Paul out-of-phase sound. Is anybody using it?
« on: December 12, 2005, 07:08:12 PM »
Hello,

I love the sound coming from my Les Paul in the position. Many people dislike it but in my case the sound is great. What do you think??

BTW, this is the guitar. Les Paul std. from 91. Bigsby, pickups, bridge and delrin nut retrofitted.

Out of phase? you got a coil tap on there or do you mean the middle position? (which isn't out of phase, at least not on mine anyway)

NICE GUITAR!

If you mean the middle toggle position of a Les Paul, yes I love it! With my Mules, the tone is amazing for clean/bluesy crunch style sounds. Almost stratty.

I had great fun with the middle position, neck pickup coiltapped and all controls at 10....for some reason, with my VHII's and a boost pedal, that kicked serious ass. I love that tone!
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away...

I have only just begun to experiment with what I call 'silly' sounds, thanx to PhilKing's influence.

He wired my snakeskin guitar so that the middle pos. of the 3-way switch is the slug coil of the bridge HB and the neck at the same time, in phase, and in series. It's a pretty cool sound, actually, tho my wife says it sounds like it's 'under water'. lol

My Washburn LP style guitar has out of phase in the middle by accident.  I like it, but I like it out of phase with the neck split more a lot more!

I rewired my Epiphone Sheraton to give coil tap, in/out of phase and series/parallel combinations.  It's the "Jimmy Page" mod.  Like this.  http://www.guitarelectronics.com/product/WDUHH3T2204

Can't remember off the top of my head how out of phase compares to parallel.  :)

I love Bigsbys.  Did you fit it yourself?  How easy was it to fit?

A friend did it for me. He did a great job also at cutting a new Delrin nut. Look at this:

Neither. It's the sound of the Peter Green's Lester. It's hollow and nasal but in a lovely way. The thing is that my two pikups are made different for each position so the phase cancellation is not thta evident as with identical pickups.

5F6-A you can wire a humbucker out of phase with itself. Try that?

With the coils being so close together, I can't imagine that would be a very good (or useful) sound.

The 'out-of-phase' sound is really the parallel wiring when you do it in one pickup.  Peter Green got it by accident because he replaced the magnet in his HB the wrong way round and also turned the neck pickup around so that the screw coil was nearer the bridge pickup.

If you get a set of BK's with one pickup with Alnico IV and one Alnico V, they give this sort of sound.  I have it in 2 of my Les Pauls.
So many pickups, so little time

I was going to mention that the neckpickup was reversed (there was a clip of the real Fleetwood Mac on Sounds of the Sixties a few nights ago).

But you beat me to it.

Certainly on the wolfgangs the 'rotated' pickup also makes a tonal difference (a nice one), as the only tone I like from my cheap wolfie is from the neck position. Yes I know add a pair of bare knuckles to it (Mules being my preference). But all my funds are being put towards a Ric 12 (hopefully I'm getting it on Tuesday)
