Different tones, also custom neck pickup?
« on: August 06, 2010, 03:44:41 PM »
I have a Caparison Horus HGS with a painkiller in the bridge right now. I really like it, but it's lacking that lower mid growl that I desire. I feel like a ceramic warpig would fill that void. I'm basically trying to achieve the tonal characteristics that are displayed on Soilwork's new album.

As far as the neck pickup goes, I have a dimarzio tone zone S in the neck of the horus right now, but i'm just not feeling it. Does anyone have speculation whether or not Tim can make a single coil version of any of the pickups? I'm not 100% sure of what i'd need in the neck, but I was thinking a VHII thus far. The solo tone Peter Wichers has on Natural Born Chaos is more or less along the lines of what i'm looking for.

 Thanks!

if you like the painkiller, but its only a little bit off in the low mids, just get an EQ pedal - that'll sort you out.

For the neck pickup, BKP don't make single-coil-sized humbuckers, be they stacks or rail types like your DiMarzio, so you can't get a "single coil version", as such, of a BKP humbucker.

You'd have to go with a regular single-coil, but maybe one of the existing range would suit you.  I've never tried them, but Trilogy Suite seems to be a popular choice with metal players using HSS or HS guitars.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

There's a guy on youtube, LiamENGL, that uses the C-Pig for Soilwork stuff as well as Scar Symmetry and other stuff, and I'm on the honeymoon period with mine so I'll be quick to recommend.  :good:

I'm not a single-coil guy, but I have a feeling one in the neck with the C-Pig would be awesome. It would be super-articulate for the kind of fast-paced phrasing you find in that kind of music.

Thanks much guys! I've been following LiamENGL for a whlie, and that's what gave me the idea for the C-Pig in the first place. I'll also check out the current range of single coils.
