NPD: Cold sweat and riff raffs!
« on: August 07, 2010, 12:38:25 PM »
oh glorious day. i finally replaced the blackouts in my 8 string with a cold sweat bridge and riff raff neck. i haven't had the chance to properly try it out, but tonight's rehearsal will be the real test. So far i like the riff raff neck, it's quite bubbly and clear, and when driven into a OTT preamp it sounds really shreddy. the CS8 bridge i like also, but my real opinion will show itself tonight.

both pickups balance out quite well in volume. i was expecting the CS to be much brighter than my black dog, but the low end frequency is a bit lower. of course this is probably due to the CS being in mahogany and the black dog in ash, but still, it's quite a good surprise. i'm sure the low F will be crushing tonight, compared to being thin and weedy with the blackouts.

i replaced the control scheme too and am looking for stuff to add. right now i fitted push push killswitch (after taking the picture) in one screw hole of the 5 way switch. will probably fit a split DPDT switch on the other hole. the slot i'm still wondering what to do. also awaiting some black matte pickup rings from dave at fretsonthenet. then it'll be finished proper.

for fitting, i had to trim the pickup tabs a bit with a file and cutters, but nothing too drastic, worked like a charm. (thanks to a flat base) and i had to drill a hole under the bridge to the control cavity to run a ground wire. (damn active pickups..)

here's a pic! clips and stuff will follow in the later weeks

Oh my GAWD that Axe looks so scary!

I'd really wanna hear some clips with riffing on the lower strings!

Thanks. it is quite scary. i've gone up to .95 on the low F string. i had a d'addario before and it sounded a bit muffled. i fitted a set of elixirs now and it's piano like, very resonant.

the song that we play that abuses the 8th string has only two riffs on it. one is a severly galloping thrash attack not too unlike iced earth (i tell you you gotta bang that string for it to sound right...) and the other is a single note djently played thinger. once i get that recorded it'll definitely show both extremes of the pickup :)

it's a tool you have to use, but i don't abuse it to much. sometimes instead of going to the 8th fret of the B string for a G. i go to the first fret of the F# just for added low end and thunk. but i'm definitely not going to turn into dino cazares as far as 8 string abuse goes  PDT_016

that a 26.5" scale schecter? I tried an ibanez RGA8 recently and damn the low F# string was spaghetti loose, 27" scale, think the string was a .068" or a .070"

yeah sadly it's only 26.5 but with the big strings i use it's tight enough. just big. i use the .68 for the low B and .95 for the 8th :)

Tone Report!

the first thing i gotta say, to everyone that doubts pickup height makes a difference: you're wrong!

i had balanced out the volumes for the riff raff neck and cold sweat bridge so they were mostly even on a clean tone. did a quick test at home, seemed okay.

plugged into my band rig, the cold sweat was very thin and weedy. lacked gain, sounded a bit like my blackouts. i wasn't too happy. but i knew BKP's were very sensitive to height. got a screwdriver, moved the pickup back up to maybe 2mm away from the strings. and that's when the tone got huge. my black dog has an all-around low end roundess to it. the cold sweat is tight as $%&#. a bit more compressed but the pick attack really shines through even on the gigantic low F. and of course all over the fretboard it sounds great.

the riff raff neck. whoa. I -really- like the clean this one gives, so smooth and singing. i do alot of hybrid picking arpeggio runs for clean tones, and it really works well on the riff raff.

I'm loving it :D we recorded yesterday but i don't have the clips yet. in maybe a few days i'll have that low end riffage you all request.
