It's time to make a serious decision!
« on: August 18, 2010, 11:36:06 PM »
So, I am applying for a better paid position at work. I'm just a cleaner at the moment, but hopefully I will get an interview soon for a supervisor's position that I have applied for (already talked to the nice lady, and so far so good...).

I don't want to jinx it, but I've started thinking about my next (and possibly last for at least 10 years) Guitar purchase. Now, the job isn't going to be that much better paid than my current position, but I will at least be able to save for some new gear. I am already severely pushing the limits by resolving to get my hands on an Axe FX, because that'll be my recording (and gigging if I ever decide to play live) rig sorted.

Now here's the thing, I am only really ever going to be able to afford about £800 - £900 tops, which severely limits me. I want this guitar to be perfect, but for the price I am going to have to go standard, factory model stuff. I had my eyes on a Schecter C1 Blackjack ATX as something to start from, but it still doesn't tick all the boxes for me.

My perfect instrument would be:
27" Scale
String-thru-body,
Painkiller Bridge, Cold Sweat Neck,
Korina or Mahogany (not 100% decided on which body and neck wood yet)body and neck, ebony fingerboard
Birds-Eye maple top (can just be a laminate, it's mainly for aesthetics really, heh)
Possibly Neck-thru, or at least set-neck.
Jumbo frets.

As far as I can see, this spec isn't going to come out of a factory. I may even want a slightly wider neck than usual, somewhere between a 6 and 7 string.

Is there any miraculous place in the world that would be able to deliver a custom guitar for my guide price, or am I really grasping at dreams that will never materialise?

Did I mention I want this guitar to look exactly like Jonathan's Emerald Lion with the Birds-Eye Maple cap from a while back? (In his avatar :D)

I have the distinct feeling something like this is realistically going to cost at least £1700 or so, and therefore out of my reach entirely.  :?

Hmmm, I just found that some Agile models tick a few more boxes than the Schecter. The super strat shapes are nicer than most I have seen, but I can see myself getting bored of that fairly quickly, whereas that Emerald Lion is a timeless classic.

Agile custom shop is charging for quotes now, though, and I've no spare money for frittering away on something that might not happen.  :?

I have heard they are more reasonable than most, though. This warrants further investigation!

Provided you can go for cheap pickups and upgrade them to BKPs later, a custom Agile will probably come in at under a grand all told, providing you don't get too OTT with the spec. They've done some really nice 7 string LP shapes.

Have a word with Bob from Legra

He has some stripped down and CNC'd meat and potato models that he should be able to do something for round a grand, maybe less, and it will be superb quality.

Misread it, when I saw Blackjack and 27" I automatically thought 7 string. In that case I think you'll definitely get a set neck 27" LP style with birdseye top from Agile for that sort of money.

WOW! I just talked to some Agile custom customers and yes, it seems like this could actually be a reality for me!  :D
I'm pretty impressed with how the guitars look on their site, and by all accounts the construction is damn good for the money. I think this is the way I will be going for sure.

Holy hell, I love that feeling when it looks like things are going to work out.  :D :D :D :D

Thanks guys, I've got a while to go before I actually commit to anything, so definitely time for more research anyway. Keep suggestions coming if there are any more, this is going to be my main, perfect guitar for the next decade so I want to get it right, heh.

Similar thread over at musicradar - http://www.musicradar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=65773 it may give inspiration or ideas. I would (and am doing) put down a deposit with a builder and save the rest whilst it's being built.
