What string brand do you guys use?
« on: August 21, 2010, 11:10:23 PM »
I currently use Ernie Balls, but I am considering changing them because they die WAY to fast. I'm just curious to know what other brand(s) you guys use to achieve your tone

DR tites.

Also a big fan of GHS boomers and Newtones. DRs deliver the tone I like best though.

D'Addarios for me - 10-46s on Eb-tuned 25½" scale guitars, 10-52s on Eb-tuned 24¾" scale, 10-59 on my 7-strings.

Have tried many/most other brands, but always come back to D'Addario...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

I changed to Pyramid 11s maybe 3-4 years back and haven't looked back.  They last forever, never snapped one yet, feel great and the tone stays fat.

I get them in lots of ten from Thomann - about £3.00 a pack (actually, they're under three quid... http://www.thomann.de/gb/pyramid_e-gitarre_saiten_011_48.htm)

Ah, a nice old-fashioned strings thread.  Evergreen.

Bog-standard D'Addario 10-46, on everything.  Having said that, I tried a couple of guitars with 11s at the recent BKP meet and they didn't feel as unmanageable as I expected.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Bog-standard D'Addario 10-46, on everything.

Same here, bar my Modern Eagle which has D'Addario 9.5s on it.

I switch a lot depending on guitar and how I feel (I switch gauges too).

I like the RIPS Balls (with brass or what around the ball ends), they give some more meat to the plain strings. Also hold up longer.

I like GHS because they're bright and cheap.

I like DR Tites, because they feel great, but IMO they loose brilliance rather quickly.

I love Pyramid, because they're German, they're cheap and the sound and play good.

I like SIT because they are great quality and sound/feel great, hold up well too.

I switch back and forth depending on guitar and how wimsy I am finger wise:
9-42
9-46
9.5-44
10-46

I use Snake Oil Brand - they last a long time without losing their tone.  Dean makes me sets up with some strange gauges that I've come to like through the years.  I have 10-12-16-26-36-46 for strats, 10-12-16-28-38-48 on PRS and 11-13-17-30-40-50 on Gibsons (though I have a couple with 11-13-17-28-38-48, like my SG Junior). I also like D'Addarios and DR pure blues, though I'm not keen on the gauges of their 11-50 set.

I haven't used anything less than 10 in years, even on PRS's.  I tried their 9.5's but went back to 10's.

I'm an acid sweaty pig, so i use elixirs. 11-49 on my 24.75 scale guitars. 10-52 and 68 on my 7 string and 10-52-68-95 on my 8. same for acoustics. 13-56 on both my jazzbox and acoustic guitar.

i also had a brief stint with ernie ball coateds, they're pretty nice! should try them again for my  next swap on my teaching guitar.

but elixirs last me a month top. afterwards they're all rusted. better than a week for a regular set however!
My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

I picked up a pack of DR's today, and I really like them, much more than the Ernie Balls.

Ernie Ball Regular Slinky on everything (and .66s for the low B on my 7 if I recall). I'm told EBs have more tension than any other set with the same gauge in the same tuning.

That's a big jump from the 46 on the E, does it not feel unbalanced?

I use Newtones. 14-60 or 14-70 depending on whether it's a 25.5 or 24.75 scale guitar.
