Nice one Dave :D I'm having no luck on the job front - still haven't heard back from two places and turned up to Sky today only to be told that the guy I was meeting is on holiday and forgot to cancel our appointment! 4-5 hours of travelling and 25 quid down the sh1tter (I'll also let you make up your own innuendo from that last bit)!

I hope you made a personal connection with his PA/Secretary and got HER assurance that he will reschedule your interview.

She/they are the gatekeepers and if you flatter/make them indebted to you, you will get to the boss quicker!

PLUS...

If Sky is like all the other BIG companies I've dealt with you will be able to get your expenses back from HR if you were invited for interview!

Problem is it wasn't really an "official" interview - I applied for something but got a reply saying its already been filled but that I should go in for an "informal chat" as they may have some suitable positions coming up in the future. He's ringing me some time next week to do it over the phone instead.

Still make friends with / create an psychological obligation from his PA!

And really try to arrange to meet him personally... no matter if it costs another £25.

When he gets back from holiday he will have an inbox full of things more important than you, so you have to take more active steps...

The PA will remind him and if you communicate effectively they can be your "inside man"

At very least you can confirm a time for you to contact him
(this is preferable because you can prepare yourself and have your mind right to direct/respond the conversation)

The PA manages his diary or directs his calls so...
