What pickup can sound closest to Tools "10,000 days"?

Im looking for a tone to be similar to that sound. Not totally identical, but similar with some individual character of its own. Something aggressive, has mids, crunchy, and is sensitive to the volume knob. It will be going into a Les paul. Thanks guys!! :D

That one came out in the past, and yeah! Holy Diver was the choice. We use Rebell Yell for Tool on a LPstd. with excellent results. There is Shaman who is really into it... check his post if you can. Good luck.

Ceramic or alnico V? Doesn't the nailbomb lack mids?

Tim usually recommends the nailbomb, but the holy diver works much better for that, imo

the nailbomb has a more aggressive top and output, but more paf sounding mids
diver has a fatter and more modern sounding midrange

But does the HolyDiver stay tight when tuned down? I dont go past C.

Drop C or C standard tuning like QOTSA or arch enemy ?  I used to play it down to drop C/B and it was tight and punchy but its not the best for tight downtuned stuff I think. Well I mean its not the most suited to play gojira or djenty stuff, big punchy open riffs like tool are no problem, diver handles that piece of cake.

I just found out what "djent" meant  :lol:, and i hate that sound anyway. It's lifeless and annoying. Sounds like a machine gun  :lol:

Would the HolyDiver be able to get an Opeth type tone too?

Depends more on the amp you will be using I'd say. I used it on a specific baritone made for me (that is now sold, could not dial in sounds I liked since of the body wood being too special sounding for my tastes) and a 5150. I think opeth plays on laney so a british sounding amp with good amount of gain will do the job.

The Holy diver is also fantastic as a lead bridge pickup. The neck lacks a bit power for lead work but is very musical and not so fat sounding on clean settings which can be quite good for a les paul. But the bridge man, its thick, never gets harsh on high notes and has that creamy middy solo tone when driven by a good amp. I miss it for those sounds.

Adam Jones uses a JB so I'd have said Holy Diver or similar. A5 anyway.

A massive part of his sound is his amps. 10,00 Days mixes it up a bit, but Lateralus especially screams Diezel. I can get a pretty convincing Tool-esque tone with just about anything into my Einstein...

Well i have looked at some recent pics of adams guitar in one of the guitar world magazines and the pickups dont have the seymour duncan logo on them, not unless he scratched it off or something lol. Im sure on the first 2 albums adam used a JB, but i really think he may have used an Anderson H3. Billy Howerdel uses one from APC and he was adams guitar tech so mabye Billy showed Adam these pickups. They are very Hi-fi souding and articulate much like 10,000 days. Mesa Boogie also uses the anderson H3 to insure the tonal qualities of their amps.

from pics you can tell they're not super distortions and definitely NOT anderson pickups (which have huge poles)
