Dry fingertips!
« on: December 13, 2005, 06:51:13 PM »
Yo

I have a bit of a problem of late, my fingertips are so dry that I find it almost impossible to slide and any lenghty guitar playing ends in shredded fingertips. I was just wondering do any other guitarists suffer from this? Also are there any ways around it?

Cheers

Could it be knackered strings? Assuming not, what about a lubricant such as Fast Fret?

You could put something on your fingertips, though most lotions don't work well and the ones that do are oily and you smear everything you touch. Olive oil would work well, if you have a couple hours during the day where you don't have to touch anything with your left hand. You could apply it before you go to bed and wear a cotton glove so you don't grease your sheets. My wife has some stuff from Burt's Bees that she applies at night and wears gloves with. It's supposed to fix dry skin.

OK this might sound a bit weird but.....

A teacher on my course Steven Yates (absolutly amazing electric and classical guitar player) had a similar problem and it turned out to be that there was aload of tension in his elbow, try giving your elbow a massage every now and then, and see if that helps it clear up with in a week.

I's suggest vitamin E oil rather than olive oil.

It's worked great (in my case) for both upset skin and a blown out piercing

Apparently more than 60% of what you put on your skin is absorbed and so maybe my idea of fast fret should be borne in mind. Kilby is right about vitamin E.

my skin peels all the time on my finger tips.... i  like to think of it as rejuvination... or just being too lazy to change teh strings...
but i have very sweaty hands from playing guitar... so my strings wear easily!
