necks

Hi everyone!

I'm thinking to order a custom guitar within the year. It's gonna be a jackson soloist style neck thru.

The summary:

5pc maple/korina neck, ebony fretboard
korina body wings
Miracle Man bridge/Cold Sweat neck

for thrash, death, heavy metal and hard rock.

Actually I'm torn between using 3pc maple/2pc korina or 3pc korina/2pc maple for the neck...

Having in mind that I want an ebony fretboard maybe the second choice is the best? Or maybe the 2pcs of korina are enough to warm up the tone of maple?

What do you guys think?

To help a bit I'll just specify that the the wood used for the 3pcs is gonna be a lot more because the two side pcs of the neck are thicker than the 3 centre ones which have the same thickness....

Set or bolt I'd say all maple. But that isn't helpful.

Too much maple + MM = I hope that you don't want to play cleans from the bridge pu!

I should go a bit left field and say try laminating rosewood in with the korina instead.

No I'm not interested in cleans. The luthier was very helpful. He told me that they won't have much difference but the 3p korina/2p maple would be more balanced.

I was thinking a korina neck/ebony fretboard too but I like the sound characteristcs of maple.


Edit: Another option I'm thinking is korina neck/ebony board, korina body wings and a maple top to add to the highs a bit........?
So I'll have the main korina tone with the fast attack and definition of ebony plus some added highs from the maple top....sounds reasonable.


But then again if you think the Jackson SL1s are maple neck-thrus with ebony boards!!! And they sound amazing!

I'm wondering how the neck will react with maple and Korina mix
They are such very different woods , in both density, hardness etc, and I do wonder how the two woods will react to changes in temperature and humidity etc

It may be absolutely fine though - I've never combined them myself so I have no experience to draw from
I've usually combined walnut and maple as they are more similar in characteristics

Korina is surprisingly warm toned when plugged in , which often comes as a surprise to some as it sounds really bright and acoustic when played unplugged.

Personally I love the BKP MM pickup with Maple through necks
It does that classic late 80s hard rock / or thrash crunch and the bass frequencies are really tight and under control

How different is Korina from mahogany, in density and hardness? I guess much more the same than maple and korina anyway :) This just interests me, I've seen many examples here where the local luthiers (Amfisound) have combined maple and mahogany in the neck.

Oh I have another option appeared now. :-/

To use an all korina neck/ebony fretboard and have a maple cap on the body. That is to put maple on the body instead of the neck of the guitar.

Maybe it'll be more balanced like that? Or maple as a neck part would help clarity and bite more?

I just want a deep yet clear sound for metal......

(I'm discussing this in the SD forum too and you know how it is when new approaches come up).

Mahogany and Korina are quite similar in many ways - it's maple that is the odd one out in that trio
