Doly diver or Nailbomb?
« on: August 28, 2010, 03:28:15 PM »
I think I have narrowed it down to either th HD or Nailbomb going into my Gibson LP std. bridge. I have heard great clips of both pups in LP's and I think that one or the other will work pretty good. My main remaining concern is which one will do classic rock the best since that is about 30% of what I like to play. I would like the one that is the most open sounding since my amp(splawn quick rod) is somewhat compressed, and less saturated vs say a Marshall type amp. Thanks up front!

I don't own any of those pups, I remember reading that Holy Diver might be a bit dark on Les pauls, not so sure., there is a guy that owns a Quick Rod and has the HD but on a Charvel and lives it, I think, maybe.. maybe Nailbomb is the one for you . Some gentleman might pinch in. For that 80's rock Rebell Yell are awesome on LP and Splawn amps. Look, there are many options. Best bet ask Tim!! Good luck!

It's funny. Tim recommended the Miracle man and next the painkiller when I emailed him. I just thought those 2 might be a little over the top for my needs, don't want to go against the man but, I just think higher output A5 is the way to go for me. I want warm, chunky and heavy all in one bag if you know what I mean!

diver can be dark on a dark les paul. The nailbomb is punchy, modern and percussive sounding, but not chunky or grinding. The miracle man would be more like this and the painkiller mayber too surgical. I'd say go for a nailbomb set or at least a bridge one to play about anything on your les paul and maybe get a mule or vhII neck for warmer and more vintagey tones there but the nailbomb neck is versatile aswell ;).

Usually when we have emailed Tim it has been about the type of guitar,  that includes wood, how it's  built, then amp,&music style. This is without going into details. His recommendation might have been based on your needs, so follow his advice. You have 14 days to change the pups if you do not like this ones in  particular .  Best to you man.

the diver will only sound dark in a dark sounding les paul
I had it in a brighter one (japanese, probably african mahogany, maple top) and also in a quite dark sounding les paul (brazilian mahogany and rosewood, imbuya top), and it sounded great in both cases and not muddy/muffled at all
the bright one also had a miracle man set and a cold sweat set (among other 10+ pickups)
the dark one had a painkiller, a miracle man and a bill lawrence
the miracle man actually sounded darker and more bass heavy, the painkiller got a bit nasal and the lawrence made it sound like a goddamn strat
the holy diver was actually the most balanced in that guitar

also, you have a quite bright amp
the holy diver is more open sounding than the bomb
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

My LP is a 2006 standard so your typical mahogany guitar with maple top. It is a heavy(weight wise) axe,not particularly bright , pretty good low end compared to all of my other guitars. Eric didn't you use to have the HD in one of your LP's. Why did you take it out?

I was playing mostly Pantera at the time, so I gave the miracle man a try, but the Cold Sweat definitely was the best fit for that, so it stayed
my mistake was selling the HD to a friend months later  :(
I wish I had tried it in the '73 LP Custom I bought weeks later

Did you find that the HD didn't cover more modern metal like Pantera(modern to me I'm 40) real well.Is it more suited for 80's early 90's stuff better? My Quickrod can get pretty high gain in gear 3,not like a Diezel or Engl but, still pretty gainy. Is the HD not really voiced for that and is the nailbomb more likely to cover that genre? Sorry so many ?, just want to get a BKP in the thing and let the tonal bliss begin!

i believe the miracle man or cold sweat would be better if your aiming for the pantera kinda vibe

actually it did (even my riff raff does Pantera really well with a booster), but the cold sweat is a lot closer
for higher gain metal, the diver sounds a lot fatter and more modern than the cold sweat
more like Arch Enemy than Pantera
the nailbomb would be closer to Pantera than the diver, but I do think the Holy diver would be perfect for your guitar and amp combination
it's more open and 3D sounding than both

Thanks Eric! I have never listened to Arch Enemy before, checked them out on youtube ,liked the sound. I think your correct about the HD's complimenting my current setup. Think the Diver is the one for me! Thanks guys :)

Though HD did not match my les paul custom Eric says it, it sounds very full and punchy. The nailbomb is more focused and agressive. The diver has always a sweet sound and its killer for leads with this mid push. I had one on a low tuned guitar and it nailed Arch Enemy melodic lead work but also gave me great rythm tones . So go diver go :).
