Any Mesa Mark IV users here?
« on: September 03, 2010, 02:48:02 AM »
Ever since i bought my Single recto, I have been having nothing but uninspired playing sessions and trouble getting that tone (mabye my new BKP pickups may change that )
I was curious if anyone here uses a mark IV because I want to know how it can compare to the recto. I'm seriously considering selling my recto and getting some extra cash for a mark IV.

I don't own one but having played one I think it eats any recto anytime.

I owned a single rectifier but my only experience of the Mark IV was Tim's combo at LGS '07 among all the noise on the other stands etc.  They certainly seemed different (& Mesa's own literature explicitly states that they sound different) - can't really say whether I preferred one over the other.

Perhaps the Rectifier sound just isn't to your taste?  Nothing wrong with that.  I can only think of one other amp that has given me such an instant buzz as the first Rectifier I ever tried.  YMMV (& clearly does).

Also - what cab are you using yours with?  My Single Recto head sounded great with the recto 2x12" but like cr@p with a few other cabs I tried.  In other words, does the rest of your setup really get the best out of it?

Short answer - find somewhere that has a Mark IV in stock, go there & try it before you make any big decisions.

Rectos can be buggers to EQ.

What cab are you using? FWIW I think that Mesa's oversized units suck if you want anything resembling controllability/tiughtness.

Are the tubes stock? I remember reading that Andy Sneap never liked the stock tubes in Mesas

Im using a Mesa 2x12 with a G12H30 and a V30. it's not the cab, its just the amp itself. I think I'm getting tired of it. I think I may be a Mark guy instead of a recto guy. The recto is too "in your face" sounding to me.

If you want Mesa but less in your face you should go for a Lonestar.

I have owned/played every mark amp for a while, and I did own a Recto for a short while-Mk IV is very versatile/perfect gigging amp-it has a tighter, more dynamic feel than the recto-you cant get the sag out of a IV that you get out of the modern, bass heavy recto-next to each other, it was no comparison for my tastes-you can get awesome cleans, mean blues, and tight crunch/sustaining rich leads from the IV-the IV combined with EV speaker is THE deal :D

I had a IV, but sometimes I had difficulties to find the sweet spots, as all Mesa's are rather difficult to eq. Maybe I''m lazy, that's why I play Orange (Rockerverb 50), because the tone is immediately there and I just have to finetune it a bit.

The Lonestar has amazing cleans man. Just stellar... But the gain tone is not suited for metal, and I honestly think it's not even suitable for a lot of hard rock. It's just a different amp all together.

If you want versatility I hear that the Mark V is the shite. It's cleans are modeled after the Lonestar cleans. The Mark IV kills the Rectifiers too. I don't like the Rectifiers either, and it has nothing to do with them being too "in your face"... I just think they have a bland voicing, and they need to be cranked too much to find the sweet spot.

Since I have the Rockerverb I'm not looking at Mesa's at all. The Lonestar however is a nice amp, but pricy compared to the Orange-package.
