I want a nice guitar with a Floyd, any suggestions??
« on: December 15, 2005, 10:53:28 AM »
Yeah so Im in the mood for playing on a Floyd, and im looking at guitars with Floyds and I really dont know what to get. I dont know that much about Floyds, but so far the guitars that caught my eye have been -

- Peavey EVH (Secondhand)
- Washburn Nuno Bettencourt N2
- Jackson DK2

I dont wanna spend too much on this guitar, I only want something to mess around on a Floyd with. But id also like a guitar with OK pickups, failing that I'l just stick Pigs in. But still.

Help me!

you need to be very careful with floyd guitars- some of the licensed copies just plain suck, and won't hold tune.

That being said, some of the copies are very good, if not better than original floyd roses- things like ibanez edge (not edge III) and schallers.

for cheap, the best guitars with a decent floyd are, IMO:

ibanez s470- it has a zr trem, it's a floyd on ball bearings. It's about £340.

ibanez rg1570: it has an edge pro. It's prestige. £460 odd.

Schecter C1 FR: has an original floyd, and coil taps/splits. £400

Washburn x40pro: has a schaller floyd, and duncan custom custom/'59. £450?

That's all i can think of offhand.

IMO, all those pickups could do with being changed, but obviously the washburn has real duncans, so they should be a bit better. However, even the duncans won't compare to BK's, IMO (and pretty much anyone on the boards, i'd guess), and if I were to get that guitar, i'd switch them for something better...

They Peavey EVH is a great guitar. A bit of a one trick pony with the stock pickups, but we know how to fix that.

I have a washburn chicago series KC-70V. They're heavy guitars mate, holds tune with whatever you do on the floyd rose!!! Bit of a weak pick up, but that can be sorted!!!

What's "inexpensive"? He didn't say a specific amount. What's affordable to one guitarist may not be affordable to another. Also, I didn't say it has to be new.

I picked the guitar that I think is best for the job. Ultimately, it's up to Ginger Ninja, but imo, it's well worth the time to investigate.

It's a great guitar, or I would never recommend it, lol!

The nut width is about 1-5/8", 14" radius. Profile is great.

one of my friends has a Dean superstrat type thing (not sure on the model) with a Floyd copy. It actually works great, its even easy to tune!

HAHA Ben - i played one of those custom zones the other day, expecting it to sound like ARSE, but i was actually pretty impressed. It was a luminous pink one, with a matching plastic fretboard, which felt like kacktack, but the rest of it didn't play or sound too bad for what it was (about £200 2nd hand)

*UPDATE* Also, i have a ZR tremolo on my Ibanez. You don't hear much about them; but it seems most of what you do hear is good! i love mine to pieces, since it feels so perfect, it has the Zero point system (which keeps it in tune and returns it to pitch amazingly), and a ball-bearing action aswell, which feels far superior to any other tremolo i've tried. Much much nicer than an original Floyd imho!
LOVING the Mules!

Look for a secondhand Kramer or a larrivee or Hamer - something with a Floyd original - they are the best bet and go fairly cheaply

Nope, its HSS pickups, and a cherry red colour.
