My quest for a p90 les paul has so far been fruitless, so I thought about fitting MQ's in my standard.
I like the 57 classics in my les paul, but I just fancy something a bit different with a more retro 70's feel, but responsive and with plenty of meat.The 57s sometimes disappear under the bass in the live mix, so something that cuts through but isn't trebly or harsh would be good.

Anyone using them??
What I want to know is how do they sound doing dark, bassy, heavy, overdriven, bluesy, sabbathy stuff, powerchords as well as solos.

What do you reckon???

I have 'em in a hollow body guitar. AV bridge and AIV neck. The combo is great! Plenty of power in the AV Queen. However, if you want something with more meat, real 70's Sabbath, there's the Mississippi Pig. A cross between the P90 and the Warpig. There are a few guys on the forum that have Pig90's, I'm sure they'll come in soon.

Hi, I have 2 MQ's, one in the neck with a Warpig bridge on a Richwood Explorer, the other is in the bridge position on a custom guitar. I also have a Pig-90 in a double cutaway LP Junior. Check out this thread:

As for the sounds, for real older Sabbath stuff, the Warpig/MQ combo can't be beat, though the Pig-90 comes really close! The difference is that with the Warpig there is a lot more mid chunk, that the Pig-90 doesn't have, but if you like the sound of Sleeping Village or Wizard, then get a Pig-90!

The MQ is more of the normal P-90 sound but with less hum. Think of Bad Company and Mountain for classic rock sounds, but with the MQ you can take the volume down nicely too.

I was playing my singers 70's fender mustang tonight, which is the only single coil guitar I've played thorugh my rig.
It sounded pretty good, if I could get that sound with more output, more clarity, more sustain in a les paul then that would be great.
So does that take me down the more traditional p90 route like the MQ rather than the pig90??

I would go for the standard Mississippi queen. Its got a surprising amount of power, its very clear and can give a humbucker a run for its money output wise. Dont be put off by the fact its a single coil, P90's have two humbucker bar magnets under the coil and they pack a hell of a punch. The hum is also dramatically reduced due to the Metal cover sheilding it from air born RF.

Yep, Tim had them in his 1970 gold top at music live, they sound fantastic

All I can say is: you will not be disappointed with MQs - they are just the best pups a LP style guitar can get - fat and smokey and churning out wide tone. I always find myself smiling when I play mine.

The problem you now face is Alnico 4 or Alnico 5, hot wind or classic wind. I don't envy you, phone BKP and they will sort you out proper :D
