potentiometer and Custom 550K CTS Pots - what's the difference??
« on: September 21, 2010, 07:21:38 PM »
I need to get a new volume pot for my guitar, do I go for a BKP potentiometer or BKP Custom 550K CTS Pot?? I have no idea what the difference is!?!?!

(I thought that pot was short for potentiometer anyway???)

Where are you seeing these two items, in the shop?  They're probably both the same thing.

BKP have had some 550k pots specially made by CTS, presumably to very exact tolerances (I understand the resistance of a normal 500k or 250k pot can vary by +/- 10%).

They also sell regular CTS pots, a little cheaper.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Thanks for the reply.

I've just noticed that the customs have their own page but ALSO appear in the potentiometer list! Doh!

Lowering the value of the pot loads the pick up and causes top end to be rolled off.

A standard 500 k pot with 10% tolerance  could be as low as 450 k.

Using a 550 k pot will guarentee you have at least 500 k to reserve top end.

I doubt these pots are lower tolerance as this would make them very expensive.

Good logic, that makes sense.  :)
