These:

BSO - Sleepwalk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5I-1utexOI

Good call Ratrod ; thanks for reminding me of that gem !   :D

I also have the 'B.S.O. Live In Japan' DVD - and it is of course masterful throughout.  With all respects to Larry Carlton, I think your nomination of BSO / Sleepwalk beats my own opening choice by a mile.  It just covers all bases of feel, tempo - and most of all is just  bl**dy good old fashion entertainment .  8)

I have that DVD as well. It's the best music DVD I have. It gives me goose bumps every time I play it.

In particular, the main solo (2:23-3:28)  :o

or perhaps Joe Satriani "Flying in a blue dream"

That's INSANE!!!

This isn't the version that I was after, but it's close...

Had it on bootlegged single back in the late 1980's and I literally wore out the grooves.

I'm somewhat surprised nobody has mentioned anything from Mr Vai yet...  :(

My number one instrumental somehow.

The part of 0:37 shows how a whammy bar can be used!

I also like the stuff from George Lynch a lot.

Michael Angelo Batio.... I fairly dislike most of his stuff, but ever now and then he has some very nice licks in there.

i think i'd class this one as 'relatively obscure'
