Some general questions for you BKP masters
« on: December 17, 2005, 03:23:43 AM »
Hey, my names Nate, im new to the forums, and fairly new to BKP's as well. I was reccomended them by another member off of Ultimate-Guitar's forum. I came, I listened, I died. You can get some excellent tone out of a lot of these pickups! :)

So anywho, to my question. Well, sometime early next year, im going to be getting a Fender '60s Strat (Mexi Classic Series Reissue), and I want to mod it out. Im probably going to be going with the vintage white finish on this beast, seeing as I love the white/rosewood look. I also plan to replace the pickgaurd with a Red-Tortoise Shell type look (So basically think SRV's "Scotch"). I also plan to go for the whole vintage white/cream hardware look as well, so to my first question, how well does the BKP's "Vintage Cream" cover match that old vintage look that im after?

Second, im not totally sure weather I will change the pickups on this Strat, but I probably will end up doing so. So, im a trouble spot here, im not sure which BKP's I want to go with. Im really in love with the Mother's Milk as of now, but those Irish Tour's(gotta love Rory) sound absolutely fantastic too. So between the two, which would you reccomend for me? Or can you reccomend me something else? :) (musical preferances are below).
For the type of tone im after, well my love is Blues, and its basically all I play. My hero's include Stevie Ray, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Robert Cray, John Mayer, James Marshall, etc. So I would want something that can get me that Stevie Ray texas tone dirt, plus an AMAZING clean tone as well, seeing as I mostly play clean. :)

Third, I am located in the States(Minnesota), so how do I go about getting my set of 'pups?

And fourth, just out of interest. It seems as if a lot of your pickups, and there name, are based off a certain Guitarist n whatnot. So, what might the Mother's Milk be based off? I didnt quite get that one.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and hopefully help with my search. I hope to continue be a member of this great forum.

Keep on playin',
Nate.
Phish!

Hi Nate.

The name Mother's Milk is after a Red Hot Chili Peppers album of the same name. The guitarist's name is John Frusicante. I hope I spelled that correctly.

As far as what's right for you I'd say either would do. But the Irish Tours are far more Stevie than the Milks. But the Milk's are very nice sounding from what I've heard. In fact they're what I'm going to buy for my guitar when I get the funds.  :D

To my ears the Irish Tours are more mid-focused than the Mother's Milks. The Mothers Milks seem bigger sonically and have that big bell-like Strat tone I so adore. The Irish Tours are wound a bit hotter if that matters to you.

I hope my rambling helps.

Eric

If your thing is blues, the Irish Tours are probably best.

I would get the Apaches if you play more clean.  They are great pickups and will go from Knopfler to Hendrix with no problems.  The Irish Tours have meore push in them.  I haven't played the Mother's Milk so I can't tell you how they sound.
So many pickups, so little time

This may give you a idea of the Mothers Milk.I recorded it through a Pod on a low gain Marshall setting.

I think I like the sound of PhilKing's idea, Apaches. The top end is a little warmer so they sound great dirty, and great clean too.

It does depend on the amp a little. The Irish Tours midrange gives a 'pushed' clean tone that can sound great with Blackface Fenders.

And welcome! :)

don't discard the apaches, though, they sound amazing! (i'm gassing after a set myself, if i ever get round to getting a strat!)

EDIT: welcome to the forums, nate!

and phil king hasn't tried a BK pickup (mother's milk)?  :o

Luckily for you we have a dealer in Minnesota! Solidbody guitars, give them a call.
The Irish tours have more mid push and the mothers milk have a more jangly tone. The Apaches are pure 50's strat tone.

Hello Nate, welcome from me too. All the suggestions above are right- the Irish Tours are the boys but as Phil and Mr Pig said, don't count out the Apaches. they are indeed pure 1950's tone but they do allow you to drive your amp and can get nice and meaty. Like you, I love SRV and you will be aware that Stevie had a surprisingly clean tone. I did a post in the players section in response to a request for bluesy Apache clip.If that dealer is near enough to you, see if they have some BKP loaded guitars for you to have a go on and see what you think. There are tons of very helpful and knowledgeable people on this forum. It is a tough choice because BKPs are all excellent.

I have apaches and mother's milk - both are great - but I find the mother's milk suit a 60s style strat more than a 50s style (I have mm's in my 62 JV and apaches in my 50s mex) - I dunno about Irish Tours, but I love the range of the MMs and the fact they can play brilliant cleans and raunchy dirt.

Its a tought choice - I would listen to HJM's comparisons in the players section to get a good idea of the difference.
BKPS: Milks, P90s, Apaches, Mississippi Queens, Mules, PG Blues, BG FP 50s, e.60s strat custom set

Dude, no way! Solid Body is like way close to me! I dont go in there a whole lot, seeing as just about everything is $5000+ :P. But thats great news, I will for sure go check them out. Hopefully I can get up there tomorrow.

Alright, so you guys are making this even harder. :P The Apaches also sound fantastic, but im really in love with those Mother's Milks!! Gah, Steve why did you have to have such awsome tone on that track! :P

I havent looked totally at the Apaches clips yet, but I will be off to do so shortly. And if any of you are interested, or have some free time, could you maybe record some SRV-Hendrix type licks, both clean and dirt, from each set of pickups? (Apaches, Irish Tours, Mothers Milk). Not all from the same person, I know, but if you know what im saying? I'd appreciate it.

Judging from stuff I have already heard, and your reccomendations, I will need more time to think, and a lot more listening. But right now im really looking at the Irish Tours and Mother's Milk.

Thanks for all the wonderfull help so far guys!  :D

Yeah bro, that was amazingly helpful. Thank you very much for that!

I've narrowed it down to either Mother's Milks or Irish Tours at this point, the Apaches just arent me I guess. Im not too sure which to go with as of now, but when the time comes I should be good and ready. Probably going with the Irish Tours, gotta love that tone. :)

Thanks everyone for all the help. :D
