Ibanez 5 way wiring help needed
« on: October 03, 2010, 08:43:51 AM »
Hey all i got a cold sweat bridge for my RGD as per Tims recomendation but it was second hand so didnt come with any instructions for wiring.

I have used the ibanez wiring chart from

http://www.ibanez.com/supportResources/wiring/2007/W070012_S7320.pdf

and used the following website to convert the colours for the wires

http://www.guitarelectronics.com/category/wiring_resources_guitar_wiring_diagrams.humbucker_wiring_color_codes/

so what i have done is wired the red and white together on the 4th from the right tag on the selector as this matched up with the ibanez anyway

i have then wired the green in the place of the black on the ibanez diagram then the bare and black to the pot.

I have this working but the 1st switch position which should be full humbucker (series?) sounds a lot thinner than i expected then position 2 sounds more like what i expected position 1 to sound like.

So i presume i just have two wires in the incorrect places but which two? i cannot figure this out at all and with my dodgy soldering skills im going to end up making a real mess if i keep going by trial and error so i thought id best get some input from other BKP members

maybe i should have kept the green and white together and put the red to the far tag?

I really shouldnt have decided to do this at 5.30am because i couldnt sleep :(

Think ive got it.

I found this on the sevenstring forum and wired it this way it sounds much more correct now but i arent exactly sure what the second position would be is it a coil split or tapped? Whichever it is it sounds good.

So does this all look correct?

The green and white wires are always the "coil split" wires on BKP pickups, Tony, so they should be wired where the red and white wires from the Ibanez pickup were connected.

I'm not 100% sure on the next bit, but I think the BKP's black wire should connect to the switch (where the Ibanez black wire was) and red plus bare should connect to ground on the back of the pot.  That way, I think, you have the slug coil active in position 2 when both coils are split.  So I'm disagreeing with the sevenstring forum diagram, but maybe I'm being thick... maybe you should try their suggestion first.  :(

You can test by tapping on the polepieces as you move the switch, to see which coils are active.  If it turns out the screw coil is active in position 2, then swap round the red and black wires.

In that second position (or position 4 as it's labelled on your second diagram) both pickups are split, there aren't any "tap" options (although people often say coil tap when they mean coil split  :x ).

I followed the 7string diagram and it sounds alot more correct i just wanted further clarification.

Shouldnt the black be going to ground? this is how i have it on my RGA thats just wired in humbucking with the MM.

Thanks Philly you always seem to be first to chip in with help on my wiring dilemmas.

It probably should, I don't think my brain's working properly today (but I am sure about the green and white).  :?

Get something metal like a little screwdriver, a key or something and try tapping on the polepieces with the guitar plugged in.  In position 2, the inside coils (the slug coil on the BKP) should make a noise but the coil nearest the bridge (screw coil on the BKP) should be quiet.  If that works, you're OK.  :)
