Hey guys,

I'm looking for a set of pickups for an Ibanez RG7620 (or an 1527, not sure yet what I'll buy), which means, for a basswood body and maple neck guitar. I'm searching for pickups with a contemporary/modern sound, but that don't sound like a SEGA, if you know what I mean. I mostly play Technical death metal, so I'd like it to be very aggressive and powerful that can handle lots of gain with very definition. I also play some Jazz-fusion stuff, so I want really beautiful cleans. Kinda like the sound of Cynic (you know them, right? :).
So what do you think?

Cheers!

Nailbomb and more brutal Warpig. Nailbomb will clean more beautiful I reckon.

Look into the nailbomb and ceramic warpig imo.

Those 2 from what i read on these forums are aggressive pickups that can clean up well. Especially the nailbomb.

The C-Pig does clean up well. Honestly, I don't know why I didn't just suggest that.

Tim suggested me a Miracle Man set. What are your opinions on it?
Also, you're suggesting C-pig neck and Nailbomb bridge, right?

Cheers!  :D

EDIT:

I didn't ask Tim, I asked the guys at Axe Palace they recommended me the MM set. My bad :D

The MM is great for heavy stuff, but ceramic maybe not that good for clean and I think certainly not for jazz. But, Tim knows best, ask him.

The miracle man works fantastically well in basswood ibanezes for the heavy stuff, but in my experience the cleans don't stack up too well for jazz, where you're really after a totally clean, fat sound. That tends to come from the AlNiCo pickups. For the kind of versatility you're asking for, I reckon you'd need a holy diver, and probably 2 different amps, one for your heavy stuff, the other for the jazz.

Incidentally, the only bands I've heard where the guitarists sound like 'SEGA' are where they use no mids at all. It's really, really, really horrible to listen to in a band context. Although the scooped sound may sound fat and ballsy on its own, you put the other instruments in there, and it just sounds lacking. One possible exception is Raised Fist - Dedication (Message Beneath Contempt off that album especially). The guitars are somewhat scooped (although there's still SOME midrange in there), and that sounds fat as f00k...
I guess my point here is that none of the BKPs will make you sound 'SEGA'-like, unless you already do sound like that because you scoop all those lovely, grindy, fat mids out of your sound, in which case no pickup on earth will help you sound decent :)

Just my 2p :)

I can't afford 2 amps lol
But still, for just 1 amp, you think I should gt the MM for the bridge and what for the neck?

Try MM in the bridge and a cold sweat in the neck
Cold sweat neck is a great clean and blues pickup and will cope with fusion stuff well

I have this combo in one of my Feline Lion guitars shown below - the far right hand one

My recommendation wasn't for the miracle man. You're after pristine cleans, and while the MM can do passable cleans, they're not pristine.

My advice is the holy diver.

I'd go with feline's suggestion of the CS neck - I have no experience of neck pickups myself ;)
