Neodymium magnets?
« on: October 15, 2010, 01:26:11 AM »
Just went to http://www.jensentone.com/jn12-100tr.php and http://www.fishman.com/products/details.asp?id=49 and it made me think of how it would sound if a Nailbomb neck had a neodymium magnet instead of an A5.

I'm wondering because I'd like a good clean sounding neck pickup for my basswood guitar that brings outs its great clean tone and the holy diver isn't doing as well as i had hoped.

Just for reference I replaced all the parts for it with a bunch of stuff from that http://www.floydupgrades.com/catalog/ site. Even those stupidly expensive titanium saddles lol and other things aswell.

Did it because i wanted a good guitar to record with that was basswood so i figured I'd just take the money I would have spent on a new guitar and just tinker with parts and such to upgrade the ESP F-200 i had since highshool! Just needs a fret job/new frets and for me to find the right pickup combo and I'll be set.

Here's a pic! http://img202.imageshack.us/f/img2361pl.jpg/ forgot to put on the tone knob  :?

So yea just wondering if its possible and all that  8)

I loved the celestion century vintage I had, but neodymium won't improve your pickup clean tone
Tim doesn't like to mess with his models, since he tries to develop everything he does to perfection
Tom Anderson makes good neodymium humbuckers (HN series), but I don't think they have a neck model

Man that was a quick reply lol.

Just did a search on the forum and apparently these guys make a neodymium one. http://www.q-tuner.com/gl-6.shtml

Ty for the response!

If you could go into a bit more detail about what isn't quite right about the holy diver, we might be able to suggest other pickups that might suit better. I'd be very surprised if one of the 'off the shelf' models doesn't fit the bill...

I know it's kinda unrelated but... how do those titanium saddles sound?

The saddles sound like as if you put a 3/4 maple cap on the guitar to my ears anyways. Sounds a lot brighter and tighter and the strings are more defined. I don't think it'll ever be worth the stupid price for it but i love to tinker with new and different things and it does great things especially for basswood. So in the end I'm happy. Once i get my new amp I'll probably record some A/B clips because I'm sure some people are wondering lol.

The reason i was looking into a new neck pickup is because the holydiver was too low mid boomy for me. It had a great sound though so I'll use it for one my other guitars.

But i just wouldn't mind a humbucker that sounded more like a single coil in the neck but still had the power to compete with my MM and possibly the A5 warpig since after listening to clips and reading into it i would love an ultra heavy tone for the bridge of this guitar but was scared of it being too boomy aswell so i went for the MM. Love it but its too tight lol. Wouldn't mind something more organic, ultra heavy and with the top rolled off a smidge.

Ty for the replies btw! It always takes me a while to really figure out what I'd really like for my guitars which is why i usually don't post or ask and just read lol. The Q-tuner pickup looks promising and slightly weird lol so any suggestions would be welcome :)

Have you thought about sticking a P90 in there like the MQ? Might suit...

what a great sounding pickup lol.

Is it possible to get the output from 7k to 12-14k? and would doing that effect the sound?
