Electronic Drum - NEWBIE on drums
« on: October 17, 2010, 09:37:26 PM »
Hey guys, how are you???

Beside I've a $%&#ed shoulder and probably only will be able to learn playing drums in a year or so ahead, I've been living with Drums Acquisition Syndrome for a while

The problems:
1) I live in a apartment, so it must be a electronic...
2) I know cr@p about acoustic drums, imagine about electronic...

I've been looking mostly at Roland because is the one that "seems" (in the way of look) better...

I was interested in the TD-9SX, but it's listed as US$2700 usually and are very expensive too me... So I'm looking between the TD4SX or the TD9S...
The difference I see are:

1) the mesh pad who seems to be better (only thing I understood is that you can play on the board too like a real drum) on the TD4SX
2) the Sound Module seems better on the TD9S
3) the rack on TD9S seems better for future upgrades (adding more cymbals, etc)

But I can't really see which one is better... the mesh pad x sound module thing...

Any guy here can help me??
Cheers,
Fernando

A question about drums on a guitar based forum. Jeez, whatever next  :wink

Good question though - I've often thought about getting an electronic kit.  :)
I think I hate being indecisive.

I know the td series pretty well. the td4 has the same sounds as the td9. just less. same quality however. and the feel of the pads is much better on the X version of the TD drum.
My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

i've heard both the td4 and 9 in the flesh. also the 20 as my drummer had one for a while. the td9 sounds alot more natural than the 20 honestly. and the 4 is a really surprising little machine. if you can afford it , go for the TD9KX(with all the mesh pads) it's the best bang for buck drum around i think.

Man funny i stumbled on this thread as I've owned the TD9sx for over a year lol

Love it but i didn't at all look at any of the other models below the TD9 at the time =x.

So i'll just post my opinions :P

If you can get mesh it'll be worth while imo because it helps with fatigue but if you don't care about that then its not much of a diff imo. Both types are dual trigger. But mesh will also last longer and the mesh is interchangable where as in the rubber will wear down a bit if heavily played. It takes a while but its something to consider lol.

As for the module i wouldn't buy either/or because of the sounds because if you have a computer, a recording program like cubase and a midi input to the computer you can just buy something like EZdrummer or something of the like that will give you great sounds. No idea about using that scenario for live though as i bought these drums just to record with because i live with other people lol.

Don't know about A/B comparisons between the 2 though =x. When i bought the TD-9 i just stopped caring about anything new. The sounds on it do sound nice though.

The features TD-9 are a lot of fun though and useful. Very easy to use and the play alongs and other stuff do help for learning and all that. Also its very tweekable if you like the sounds on the mod! Not as  tweekable as the td-20 and td-12 though =x.

As for the rack its also very easy and all that.

If you got any questions and other stuff just ask! I'm definetly not the best in the world but I'm always glad to help :P

So yea i just took a look into it.

It seems the diff is that with the td-4sx you get mesh pads with a stripped down version of the Td-9's mod and a crummier rack.

With the TD-9s you get a better rack and a mod with more features and same quality of sounds but with 1 mesh pad and 3 with rubber pads.

I would try something like traps

http://drums-percussion.musiciansfriend.com/product/Traps-Drums-A400-Portable-Acoustic-Drum-Set?sku=491112

They do a fully electronic set too, though the cymbals aren't the greatest as they're plastic/rubber. The actual drums are pretty good though they feel better than regular pads as they're all mesh.

theres actually an alesis kit which ive played and has a decent feel to it.

And it is fully midi compatable so you could get something like BFD or steven slate and get some excellent sounds its fairly cheap too

It has all the mesh pads and also has a decent rack for upgrading

http://www.htfr.com/more-info/MR204669

Its only £379 too so it would be a great way to start out and see if your really into it.

I've been thinking of getting one myself for quite some time as being an ex drummer i do really miss playing sometimes and it would be ideal for my flat situation.

Thanks for all your help, guys!
Have heard the clips, Canadian and it's nice! :D

Here down the equator line doesn't have much options and lots of eBay sellers won't send here or will cost like US$400-600 of shipping... I've made some math, the cheapest TD4KX on ebay would be the same kind of price of one here, after the duties :?
So, I may buy this 4KX here... Just taking courage

Thanks a lot guys, again... it was really helpfull!
