need your advice on a pickup
« on: October 21, 2010, 12:50:39 PM »
Hi all,

I am new to this forum. I already own some BKPs, but would like to switch some.

I have a (calibrated) set of HDs in an Ibanez PGM30  (http://www.musik-service.de/Gitarre-Ibanez-PGM-30-Paul-Gilbert-prx395361011de.aspx). I also have a set of (calibrated) Painkillers in an Ibanez RGA121 NF.
The whole thing goes into a Diezel Herbert.

I would like to change the HDs. I am searching for a sound that is a little bit more compressed and aggressive.
Should fit for Metalcore style (Killswitch Engage, As I lay Dying, All that Remains, August Burns Red, Parkway Drive, etc), which does NOT mean the PU should be scooped (as some people may think). The guitar is used in Standard Tuning. Besides the metalcore stuff, the PU should also be good for solo sounds like Satriani. I dont need semi-chrunch stuff or sth like that. Also I am not after huge bass because the amp has more than enough.

Any help is appreciated =)

Hmm, well Miracle Man Bridge (and neck, or Cold Sweat in the neck - ask someone who knows about neck pickups there, I don't have any :D) would suit the bill nicely. It gives, at least to my ears, a strong bass response. Not flubby (and certainly not in standard tuning), but will give you more compression and aggression than the divers. Alternatively, go all out for a ceramic warpig :)

From what I have read, MiracleMan seems a bit scooped and Warpig a bit bass-heavy.
I would not knock these out of the challange, just what I have read so far... ;-)
What do you think about a ceramic Nailbomb?

The miracle man isn't scooped.

I play (admittedly in drop-A on a multiscale baritone) a very mid-heavy sound. The Miracle Man suits that perfectly. And if you're read anything about certain BKPs being 'replacements' for EMGs, you should ignore that too! You already know from your painkillers and holy divers that BKPs really let the character of the guitar shine through.

Given the requirements, I'm pretty confident in the MM being the best choice for you. Have you asked Tim, yet?

I would recommend you a Painkiller, but you have a guitar with it, so I say Ceramic Nailbomb or Cold Sweat.

Cold Sweat has lower output than the PK and has less mid and bass, and has brighter sound.
Ceramic Nailbomb is hotter than Cold Sweat and has more mid muscle.

If you play in normal tuning, I recommend you the C Nailbomb, it has fuller sound in normal tuning than Cold Sweat.

Ben from BKP answered

"A ceramic Nailbomb, will give tighter bass response and will be very suitable for what you want with a range of rock and metal tones."

The painkiller is very cool, but I would like to have different combinations. Since I think the key of modern metal tones is in the mid-area I think I will give the ceramic Nailbomb a try =)

The miracle man isn't scooped.

this

the alnico nailbomb feels less middy than the miracle man and is hardly mentioned as a midscooped model
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

I don't know where people keep getting this idea that the Miracle Man is scooped in the mids....?  It just doesn't have a midrange bump like many high-gain pickups have.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog
