What do you guys think about these clips? They are from Granger. I think they both sound very Marshall. The thing I like about the Granger amps is he can put Kt88s in the amps.

The attack seems kinda soft on that 2204, but it has a great "bloom" to the notes that you wouldn't get on the stiffer original. Very nice twist on the 800 tone. But are the clips low volume?

I don't second the Bogner recommendation. I owned a Shiva and own a 100B, and while they are amazing amps in their own right, they ain't no Marshalls not. The Bogs have a darker tone than a 2203/04 to them, that signature low mid bloom, even the 100B which is the brightest voiced of all the Bogs. So if you're set on Marshall, get a Marshall (unless you can afford a Marsha/Friedman or some other boutique Marshall take).

You could look at the Morgan 30/800 for a lower volume 800 twist.

the 2204 replica is not a hot rodded marshall
it's just a clone
the mod mentioned on the description is quite simple and comes in some other stock non-800 marshalls
just a small cap mounted in a stock resistor for more upper mid push
and a bit more fizz cut in the phase inverter

I wouldn't get a 20 watter

if you want KT88's, just get a used VHT or Fryette Deliverance 60
it's directly Marshall based as well, but has its own voicing

Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

I wouldn't get that overly excited about KT88's unless you've used them and know you like them.

I just think its kind of a cool feature but it shouldn't be the deciding point. If that makes sense.

Granger though, what I always found odd was this...
http://www.youtube.com/user/grangeramp#p/u/4/5BtE4wzag1U

at 1:34 that PCB is the SLO100clone PCB that you can buy from various spots. The sticker saying 'lead overdrive' is over etching on the PCB that says 'not for commercial use'. Maybe that granger dude has an arrangement; he's definitely adding some goodies to that amp that ain't part of that PCB, but I just find that odd... and therefore find Granger odd.

The Bogner Goldfinger sounds different from the Shiva.XTC. More vintage and more (plexi)Marshall, I think. But yes, not a Marshall-circuit.

Thanks for your advise all around guys.

I think what I am down to (unless something else comes up)

The Granger 2204, the Splawn streetrod/quickrod, and ceriatone.

I wonder if I buy either one of those amps could I mod them further to soup them up a little more. What do you guys think.

Pro for the quickrod is the versatility between plexi through Modded 800.

Pro for Granger is the very full tone (they also have excellent user reviews)
Con might not have enough gain.

Ceriatone amps seem very interesting to me. The stock 2204 ok from the clips I heard (not nearly good as granger or splawn, but the sound quality was terrible)

The Chupa Cabra sounds interesting but i havent seen any audio clips for this. On youtube I heard some Jose modded marshalls and they sounded awesome

Anyway any parting opinions? Anyone have experience with splawn, or ceriatone?

Actually, the new Marshall AFD100 could be perfect.

don't know why I never thought of this, but the Laney GH50L is basically a hotrodded 2203/2204.

Trouble is I could never get it to sound right - IE - just like a Marshall
Dont know if that was due to the H&H speakers (made by Laney) or if some voicing was different or if transformwer differences were making it sound wrong to my ears.

I will happily sytand corrected or maybe there is a simple enough mod tat does the trick nicely
I found that the LAneys sounded great with single coils but were wooly with humbuckers - compared to a Marshall

might've been the cab, I've played these amps and they were very much that trademark Marshall roar to my ears - great value for money.  nice tight bass end too - sounds like you found a bad one.

as for the H&H speakers, they're 'ok', not the greatest.

Was yours running El34s or 5881s? The GH series could use either, and they sound more MArshall-like with the EL34s.

I have to admit I'm not entirely convinced of the wisdom of buying a brand new amp with the immediate intention of modifying it.

agreed, I'd buy an amp that I was 100% happy with in the first place.  if the amp is 'almost' there, you might as well go custom (plenty of boutique amp guys out there).
