Pickup for dark sounding LTD Viper 1000
« on: October 27, 2010, 09:23:58 PM »
Hello guys,

need your advice again because I would like to put a new bridge pickup in my LTD Viper 1000.
I mostly play classic rock, hard rock to old school metal with it.

My first thought was -> Black Dog, but problem with this guitar is that it sounds very dark and so I need some highs to cut through, but it should also do some good clean stuff. Next thought was -> Cold Sweat, but how good are the cleans...
So what would you guys recommend?

Thanks :-)

Forgot to mention: Although it's hard/classic rock the tuning is Drop C! So I also need tight bass response.

Cold sweat!
Caeramic magnet keeps the bass tight and has a nice high cut

Maybe look to swap the voulme and tone pots to the new 550k ohm ones that Tim has introduced

I'd be between the riff raff and cold sweat
both are tight, bright, edgy, punchy and don't mud up in lower tunings (I have both and my band tunes in drop C)
the sweat is more aggressive and grinding
the riff raff is more open and organic, a bit clearer through high gain

Cold sweat, from what I've used.

From what I've heard the riff raff would do very well too.

I am planning to swap the pots, cause the "stock" pot doesn't really work properly.

How about the cleans especially regarding the CS?

and thx again  :)

to my ears, the black dog isnt dark. perhaps not bright but certainly not a dark pickup. it probably isnt "heavy" enough for your needs though.

Haha, I can! I would have gone with the Rebel Yell in this one. It has amazing clarity and tightness, yet that organic sound you can only get from an alnico pickup. That said the CS is a good match too, so Tim didn't lead you wrong :)

I would have gone with the RY too, cause I like alnico V and the RY is very thight. But hey, this is not my guitar.  :)
