Bridge pickup! Single Vs. Humbucker
« on: October 27, 2010, 09:44:13 PM »
Hello,
I'm lookin' for a new bridge Single\Humbucker pickup for my Strat. the type of sound I'm looking for is like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains , Foo fighters, Black Sabbath.
so basicly what I'm looking for is an single\humbucker that will sound great on overdrive\distortion but won't be too treble and thin like my currect Single coil.
So could you recommand on some pickups for me? Single Vs. Humbucker?

Trilogy for single coil. Crawler or Holy Diver for humbucker.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Agreed on the Crawler humbucker for the bridge, I think it'd suit you perfectly  :)

we're missing half the information - whats your amp?

SSS strat is a beautiful thing, lets try to keep it that way if we can :)

edit: though re-reading your tonal influences, the guys might be right on the humbucker bridge. nevertheless.. ;)

I agree SSS is great! but it's too treble and thin for me in the bridge :(
My amp is a Peavey Classic 30.
I'll read some reviews on the Crawler and Holy Diver. isn't the Mississippi Queen is a P90? would it fit my styles?

any more suggestions?

Thanks again!

So am I the only one who thinks a Sinner with baseplate would be the ideal true single?

It's a monster.

That neededn't be true - especially with BKP. Ask Tim about a Sinner or Trilogy bridge, or even a Slow Hand with baseplate. All meaty pickups, and strat single coils.

i do agree, but the tones mentioned all come from humbuckers originally. i would prefer one of Tim's gutsier single coils though

Thanks for the commets.

as far a I know, Kurt Cobain mostly used single coils (in his Strat and Jag Stag..). and Mike McCready in Pearl Jam's early era was mainly used a Stratocaster. later he started playing Gibson's guitar too.
But I'm after my own sound not after someone else's sound, the bands I named was just an example of what amount of gain I want my pickup to sound good with.
I'm not looking for an high gain pickup. I want pickup that sound awesome with mid gain to mid-high gain and that will have a vintage vibe in it (that won't be too modern).

People told me that I'm looking for a Powerfull PAF any idea what that means?

Not quite true. Mike McCready favoured Stats in Pearl Jam and Iommi has used P90s, just have a look at the Monkey SG, so neh, neh.

yes, it is... iommi used p90s in the first BS albums, and in general you can describe their tone like fatter and punchier single coils, that's what you seem to look for.
