Advice for New Neck Pickup
« on: October 29, 2010, 12:01:34 AM »
Quick question.

I need a new neck pup.

Advice?

Guitar:
Ibanez 1993 S540, originally burled mahogany with antique violin finish, removed finish, and stained and shellac'd.  Turns out its burled mahogany top and bottom chunks with mahogany middle and maple (I think) layered in-between.

It has a Lo-Pro edge with brass block.

For electronics, I have a 1M vol pot, 500k tone, both CTS, a 0.022uf orange drop tone cap (and a 0.027 PiO cap somewhere), and a Fender superswitch for my own custom switching scheme.

I currently have a PK in the bridge, a vintage single coil (no idea what it is, just that it's hot and toasty), and a Q-tuner medium Z in the neck.  I want something a bit more powerful and organic.  I was considering the Aftermath for a neck, but I'm not so sure as it's fairly better as a bridge pup, any help?

Thanks.

Btw, I got about 3-4 years of experience dealing with guitar electronics, so if there's a mod I can do to the components to get what I want, that'd be appreciated too.
I'm not good enough, technically, to be a classic musician. I lack discipline.

In a mahogany Ibanez Saber guitar, taking into consideration what you seem to be looking for, I would recommend the Cold Sweat or Miracle Man neck model. The Miracle Man neck has a fluid, powerful lead tone and great harmonics. It has great full-bodied clean tones as well, and sounds really nice split or combined with the bridge.

The Cold Sweat neck isn't as hot but also has a 'sweeter' sound yet also a little cleaner. The MM is a bit more smooth in the mids, whereas the CS neck has a nice throaty midrange when pushed. I would say the Cold Sweat is the more 'organic' of the two, so perhaps that's what you should go for. However the alnico MM neck model is one of my personal favorites, really great for leads - real smooth and powerful.

The Aftermath neck I'm sure would be just fine as well. It sits in between the CS and MM in terms of output.

+1 to what AP said
I favour both these pickups and yes the MM is a bit more fluid and shred friendly whilst the CS is somewhat more in classic territory.

Interestingly enough when Tim was designing the Cold Sweat set he found that the neck Miracle man was a good match, before coming up with the classic that is the CS neck pickup.
