yo, that video is terrible.

"nobody has looked at the guitar for quite some time blah blah blah...."

I think other people have made more innovative steps away from the traditional guitar while keeping things sensible and aesthetically pleasing. Steinbergers might polarize opinion on looks but its just one example.

The keep saying they are historically a big innovator when it comes to guitar, and this has always been the case and they carry it forward. I just don't see it.

You don't even have to look to something as radical as a Steinberger - how about Tom Anderson and Suhr with their new vulcanized maple necks and Vigier with the 90/10 neck? Those are HUGE leaps forward. Necks that need little to no adjustments is an invaluable leap forward in technology that has practical real world use and value. How about using different materials like Flaxwood or offering incredible value and tons of options like G&L? There are a million ways to innovate without cramming a bunch of useless cr@p into a very aesthetically questionable design.

I almost went to this thing. Now I'm kicking myself for not going - nothing would have given me more sick pleasure than the douche chills and schadenfreude I would have got watching Henry do his best Steve Jobs impression.

Fender haven't innovated, they've just always provided the customer with what they want.

Yep - and they dropped the VG strat pretty quickly (at least I think they did)

I've just watched the launch video. The loooooooongest 2 minutes of my life. I could do much better than that and would cost them much less money.

I've always said that I'd want a nice LP or a 335 from Gibson - I might just try Tokai or something else instead now. Something about Gibson stinks (arrogance I reckon) and it's actually putting me off of the models that made them such a big name.
I think I hate being indecisive.

It reminded me of one of those terrible, embarrassing presentations they do on The Apprentice.

Funnily enough, I've spent much of this week scouring the net for Gibsons!

Obviously now I've switched my attention to the Firebird X.

I think Heritage is better for a lower price. If they are still in production I don't know.

THIS has much more appeal...
http://www.espguitars.com/guitars_phoenix.html

It's very cool, but to be fair (to Gibson) that ESP guitar wouldn't exist without the original Gibson design.  Even the name is just a play on Firebird!

It is a very intelligent variation on the Firebird theme, though.  Gibson only seem to be able to come up with worse versions of their designs.

I wish ESP guitars didn't all have "Thin U" necks   :( .  They make some good stuff.

and it has an RD vibe to it.

I love the RD. never played one though, and the gubbins in it puts me off a little, but i think the shape is great.
that ESP that is half way between the RD and Firebird isn't to my tastes, thought i prefer it to the fisher price firebird x shape.

Just been brave enough to watch the demo vid/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhyWlF6tWig

I feel sorry for the guy that had to demo it. Some of the sounds are okayish but for $5500 I would expect loads more. The fuzz is pretty shocking.
