Pickups for PRS SE Torero
« on: November 08, 2010, 10:22:54 AM »
Hello all! I'm a long time lurker and it's my first time posting.

I recently purchased a PRS SE Torero. It was more of an impulse buy than anything else because it was on sale. Here are the specs: http://prsguitars.com/setorero/specs.php

The guitar plays and feels like a dream. My only gripe about it is the abysmal EMG pickups. I've been using Dimarzios ever since I started playing about 3 years ago and I'm used to all the fluid and dynamic lead tones. The compression and lack of dynamics of the EMG's coupled with blatant "lifelessness" was just too much for me. They are also extremely cold and dead sounding. I've decided to turn to the best pickup company, after much consideration.

This guitar is also my first guitar equipped with a Floyd Rose and I realised that a noticeable amount of sustain was missing, compared to my Fender Strat and Fender Custom HH Tele. The acoustic tone is pretty balanced overall with a slight emphasis on the low end due to the mahogany wings, I suspect.

My band's music revolves around alternative rock, although we do go into very heavy territory from time to time. Think Muse, Radiohead, The Cure, Alter Bridge and occasionally Metallica and Megadeth. Special mention goes to Muse as they are my favourite band and we're heavily influenced by them. In fact, Matt Bellamy's use of BKPs in his guitars encouraged me to try them out.

What I'm looking for first and foremost is versatility, which the EMGs absolutely fail in. I'm also after an organic tone with picking dynamics galore. Also, the ability to clean up nicely by turning down the volume knob would be welcome and I'm very certain this is achievable by no other company except BKP! In addition, I would need enhanced sustain to make up for the floating bridge.

EQ-wise, I'd like the set to have singing highs but not ear-piercingly so. A tight low end is what I'm after too but definitely not modern metal tightness. I'd also like a full and bold tone, mid wise.

For output, I would prefer a hot bridge model as I dont mind a little bit of grit when playing clean in this position. However, the neck model would have to remain as clean, dynamic and organic as possible, while still balancing well with the bridge output.

My gut feeling is a Nailbomb bridge, as that is what Bellamy uses. I'm unsure about the neck pickup, though. I know Bellamy uses an MQ in the neck position. This is where your opinions come in!

I'd like to thank all of you lovely people in advance. I also apologise if I seem to be asking for too much! It is my first set of BKPs after all and I'm pretty sure it wont be the last. :)

EDIT: I forgot to mention that for gigs, I use a Marshall DSL50 through an Orange 2X12 cab. I use a Peavey Triple XXX combo with EL34's for rehearsals and a Blackstar HT5 for home practice (lol). Thanks again!

Nailbombs would be a good choice, I have no  experience of MQ! so I would go for a set of NBs.

Thanks kevin! I'm pretty set on a set of Nailbombs as well. I'll just wait a little longer and see if there are any other opinions!

Hmm Nailbombs might be a bit on the heavy side, no? If all you go up to is Metallica/Megadeth type tones... (my 'very heavy' is somewhat different to yours, I think!). I would consider something more from the Vintage Hot range, like the Black Dog. MQ Neck sounds about right, but I'm not a neck pickup guy (I've very briefly tried some Manhattens in one of WezV's other guitars, and they were chimey and full sounding).

@Roobubba: I'm drawn to the NB because it's supposed to be a versatile all-round rock pickup, no? And maybe I'm a little biased because Matt Bellamy from Muse uses it. His playing and tone inspired me to pick up guitar in the first place! And Alter Bridge are pretty heavy too right? As this will be my main lead/balls-out-to-the-wall axe, I think I might need a high output bridge humbucker! What do you think?

@Feline: I was thinking the same thing! I've read about the versatility of both the NB and the RY, so I was thinking about just that. My main worry about the RY is that it'll accentuate the high end a little too much, especially since it's a floyd rose bridge concerned, resulting in harshness! So I'm still not sure.

Now I'm debating between a MQ neck and a NB neck. Help!! :(

Hmm... Now there seems to be a bit of a NB vs RY thing going on here.

What are the pros and cons of each? :o

Buy both (like me)

While I do not have the experience to answer your questions, I understand how the stock EMGs really kill the SE Torero. I tried one at the store and witnessed an absolutely dry and terribly sterile EMG tone. (much worse than those in my mahogany Schecter or ESP) Changing pups would do you wonders!

I think Rebel Yells are the way go.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Guys, I really appreciate all your input!  :P

However, I'm still very unsure. I think a greater explanation on the Rebel Yell vs Nailbomb is needed!

Do they have similar output? If not, which is higher?
What are the main differences, EQ-wise?
Which responds better to picking dynamics?
Which generates more harmonics?

Thank you everyone for being patient with me!  :P

Hi and welcome to Bareknuckle pickups  :D

Actually, I do know exactly what you mean as I was looking at the SE Torero and it's a fantastic guitar for the price but those EMG pickups put me off as well (and to a degree the lack of fret markers). Too many guitar manufacturers are loading all their Rock/Metal guitars with active EMG pups so I picked up one of the last Jackson SL3 Soloists instead but it was a close run thing as I think the Torero is actually slightly better built. I'm sure you'll love it once the pups are sorted.

The Nailbomb wasn't what I was thinking for a Torero but then my tastes are different. Given your aims and influences the Nailbomb seems to be the best choice to me, though on that guitar I'd probably go with the ceramic version as I think it will cut through better. The other option I'd consider is a Cold Sweat as that produces a very organic sound, will easily reach the distortion levels you want and is versatile. I had one in the bridge of my last guitar that was a mahogany bodied  thru-neck with a Floyd and it was fantastic. As for the neck pickup, I find it hard to see past a Cold Sweat in that position but I will defer to those who know more about neck pups.
