Ibanez S7420 NEED PICKUP ADVISE please!!!
« on: November 08, 2010, 03:39:03 PM »
Ok so I'm ordering an Ibanez S7420 7 string guitar.  It's a mahogany body.  I've always been a semour duncan and evo fan with all my guitars but with this 7 string I really want to make a great pickup combination.  I really like that fat scoopy lead tone (like petrucci) and a sharp chuncky, crunchy tone for riffs.  I'm new to BKP and know nothing about them.

---What pickups would you guys recommend for my liking?  So far the DiMarzio Air Norton pickup seems to have the closest thing to my liking for the neck.
Would you guys recommend anything better?

---and for the bridge pickup.....im totally lost.  I need your advise!!! lol Thanks guys.

When I asked Tim for the petrucci tone i was either going to pick up an S7320 or an RG7321

for the Basswood RG Tim said AlNiCo Nailbombs

for the Mahogany S7320 - The Painkeelah!

I got the 7321 for the fixed bridge and the nailbombs do give a great tone, but i've never used them in mahogany guitars before so can't comment on that.

Ive got one in my workshop right now and we have to fit a pair of COVERED BKPS

We have a painkiller bridge and cold sweat neck
Beware of 1 thing - the corners of the old Ibanez/Dimarzio pickups are very rounded and BKPs wont go in without some woodwork modifications
Because we are fitting Covered ones it's even worse as we have to get right into where the cover's corners will need to go
We are choosing to rout these and it means we have had to strip the guitar right down hardware-wise

ALSO NOTE THAT THE NECK PICKUP WILL NEED TO BE REVERSE MAGNETIC POLARITY

Great fretwork!

well darn :-/  that makes me sad.  And woodwork mods are something I definitely like staying away from.  Looks like I'll go with the DiMarzio Air Norton in the neck...and still looking for a bridge pickup for my liking.  Thanks for the warning!
