Guitar storage

I'm moving house next month, and the new place has a nice office built onto the back of the garage. It looks like it would make an ideal music room, BUT not being attached to the house it's not centrally heated. It's carpeted and certainly does not smell damp. Would it be safe to leave my guitars there? Is it just moisture that's an issue or will low temperatures cause problems?

I think it is the change of temperature that can the problem. Certainly dampness will bring its own problems but fluctuations between extremes is the main problem I think.

So is it just sudden changes?

Dunno, but I wouldn't like to leave my guitar out in the shed at the minute.  As far as I'm aware, it's extremes of temperature or sudden changes that are the main issues.

I would think that if you insulated it fairly heavily (which would be good for sound too) you may be OK, but I would wait for someone else to confirm it.  I'd still bring them in over winter though.

Also, concrete slabs for garages are often right buggers for conducting heat straight out a room, you'll definetly want to insulate that as well as the walls.

I'd keep the guitars in the temperature controlled house and only use the room for practice.  It's the swings in temperature that will potentially cause problems...

Would the guitars be safe in the garage? I would keep them in the house.
