Moving to Oxford... tell me about it!
« on: November 10, 2010, 12:36:45 PM »
So I happen to have made a significant progression in my career, and this 'onwards and upwards' step requires me to move to Oxford for my new job. Now, the thing being... i've never actually been to Oxford itself (have been just north of it for my interviews, but not actually inside the ringroad). So what things are there to do, what venues/ pubs are good, and what are the places to avoid!?

I think we've got a BKPer or two who are in that kind of area, so if you've got any suggestions, fire away!

Cheers!

I've visited once or twice, seems like a nice place, but I don't know too much about it at all :).

However, I do understand that to be a real man in Oxford, you have to play a telecaster.

EDIT: And big congrats on the "onwards and upwards" :D

Well, like all places there are good/nice parts and not so nice parts.

You get a real mixture of 'townies' - i.e. folks that live and work there - and the students and associated university people - plus loads of tourists.

There are some great pubs and restaurants; lovely countryside nearby and easy access to London.

Hope it goes well -

I've lived in Oxford for over 12 years now, and I own too many telecasters.

There are some really decent areas of the city, and the centre is decent, although has pretty bad traffic management (which can be a real pain when playing gigs in town!).

Of course the finest thing to emerge from Oxford is 13Gauge. :)

If you're up for the fun student side of things, there's Cowley Road. Lots of pubs and bars, a few even do decent heavy music. The centre of town has some reasonable venues for live music, too, and there's a really decent re-emerging metal scene, if you're into that sort of thing. Which of course you should be :D

Outside of that, there are museums (the Ashmolean is free and well worth a visit), Colleges (again, worth a visit) and other University buildings such as the Sheldonian Theatre and the Bodleian Library which are also well worth a look. I forget exactly when it is, but there is an annual beer festival in the town hall which is excellent :)

Plenty of decent cheese/wine/deli middle-class establishments around, too (be sure to check out the Summertown Wine Cafe and the Oxford Cheese Company). The covered market right in the centre of town is great for butchers, fishmongers and similar shops.

There are online lists of Oxford pubs - let's just say there are a few! Some very good ones (and a few really poor ones, too).

Great road and rail links to London. The Oxford Tube and the Oxford Espress buses run all through the night into central London, and can work out not too badly priced (especially if you're a commuter like me and get a longer term pass!).

Hope you enjoy living here!

i lived just of cowley road for a year.

it wasn't bad at all, but i missed the action of London and wasn't sorry to see the back on Oxford.

try to live near one of the places where the 24 hour coach service 'oxford tube' stops.

Cheers guys, i'm sure i'll get round to exploring most of the places in the area, of course i'll try and check out 13gauge, too ;)

I haven't got very long until I start work-- 1st day is on the 6th Dec, so i've got to find a place to rent, sharpish! :)

Ahh the Hi-Low or however it's spelled. Yeah the owner of that place is a proper dope head. Apparently a total arsehole of a boss until he's had a spliff... They do a mean Red Snapper in there, though :)

hi-los is a good place for a late night drink. but the owner is indeed a total depressive. i've picked up in there a couple of times, so good memories, but nevertheless - I hope you like aggressive dub :)
