Nailbomb or Warpig for the Bridge? (Basswood)
« on: November 12, 2010, 05:24:36 AM »
Hi, I have a Schecter Damien (Arched basswood body, Bolt-on rock maple neck, Rosewood fingerboard, string through body--no floyd rose).

It has EMG-H4 bridge and EMG-H4A neck passive humbucker pickups. They are ok for the metal I play.
However, I would like a more powerful bridge pickup--a bridge pickup that has more bass thump and thick distortion, full, warm distortion.

By the way the guitar is tuned to drop C: CGCFAD

I am thinking of a warpig. But I have heard that a nailbomb is good in basswood.

Any recommendations? Perhaps I should consider a different bkp?

Thanks

As far as I know both of them work great in Basswood. From the sound you described I would say warpigs are pretty much the pickups you want. They have plenty of bass, but are not dark and the distortion is tick and full. But I´m unsure what warm distortion might be. So I´ll make a guess. Because we are talking about pickups, you could mean the top end. Warpigs have a round top end. Some might call it warm.
But I think your amp (or pedal) has more impact on the character of your distortion, at least for the way I would use the term "warm distortion".

Thanks guys. And Aik, yes by warm I meant not too much top end (high frequencies).

Sir, you have just summed up the sound of a (alnico) warpig.
Before you make your final decision you should mail your questions to info@bareknu...
Nobody can be more heflpful than the guys that make these pickups, right?

How does the ceramic WP differ from the alinico WP?? Is the CS a suitable neck to be paired with the WP?

I've heard bad things about WP's in basswood guitars...

But what was the application in those cases? If someone wants a surgically tight pickup for technical riffing, the alnico warpig is the wrong choice. If someone wants a full fat beefcake monster for doom/sludge, the alnico warpig will slay for king and country.

I'm very skeptical about drawing too wide-ranging conclusions about a pickup based on one or two people's comments. I'd rather look at specific applications to pick the correct choice for that scenario.

Tim recommended a ceramic nailbomb for the bridge and an alnico nailbomb for my neck in the basswood Schecter Damien.

Does anyone know if schecter uses short legs 1/4" or long legs?

Thanks

I would assume short.
