Aftermath or C-bomb decision
« on: November 14, 2010, 09:38:51 AM »
I want to change a JB bridge pick-up from my LTD H-500 (mahogany with maple top body, set-thru maple neck, rosewood fingerboard) because of the lack of definition on the lows when playing one string picking, and the very bad clean sound, which is very loud and... I heard someone saying brittle, and I think is the right word for what I want to say - I'm not a very good english speaker, or speler - and I'm divided between the c-bomb and Aftermath.
I liked very much the sound of Aftermath from your clip (MDV's) of which I know for one year or something, but I'm worried that the midds are shadowing the highs, affecting the bite of the guitar. On the other hand, the lows of the c-bomb sounds a little bit bloated in my ears, in your post. I play with the guitar tuned in C, and when I picked up this LTD, after I had a basswood RG with a Blackout on the bridge, I was very surprised how the lows and the highs are accentuated by the mahogany-maple top body, so surprised that I thought  the guitar sounds scooped or something. After that, I ended up by cutting the midds a lot on my amp.  Still they are over middle, as long as I don't like the very scooped sound, and for that I hesitated to buy - and now the blasphemy - a Lundgren M, me being a huge Meshuggah fan.
So, after all this novel that I wrote, as The Coon said: What should I do?
I play some nu metal, hardcore, grunge rithm guitar with my band, but I still like to have a piercing solo sound for In Bloom cover for example. Does the Aftermath have less treble than a JB?

I keep the midds on my amp at 6. If that wasn't clear.

I think what Eric was unsure about was what you mean by "cutting the mids". If you don't like a scooped sound you should be increasing the mids, not decreasing (a.k.a. cutting) them.

EDIT: You should try increasing the mids on your amp. The Aftermath a good deal of midrange, and the Painkiller has even more in the high-mid department.

well! as I said, my first impression of the guitar, because of the heavy bass of mahogany and sharp treble of maple, me being used with basswood, which is a very even sounding wood in my ears, was that the sound is split. But now I belive I was wrong, because I feel that this guitar has more of everything, treble, bass and mids. And I cuted the mids because too much of them can give you a messy tractor engine sound. I like, what I call, a flat sound, and that is why I liked so much the sound of Aftermath from MDV's clip, one year ago.
So, going back to my question, does the Aftermath have less treble than a JB? Anyone?

I'll be switching my JB7 for an Aftermath 7 whenever it arrives (although my sig's already been changed in anticipation). I'll give you my thoughts when I do.
