Ok, so recently I've been ebaying alot with modulation effects, i bought a boss high band flanger, ibanez cs-9, boss dd7, and very recently a tonerider chorus (thanks to a lot of looking around and heaps of positive feedback on this forum). oh and just as a warning this may be dragged on a tad, so please forgive me.
I love me a good chorus with distortion (placed after the distortion, but only a very subtle shimmer), and i love the sound i get when i run distortion through to the dd7 on its modulation setting (which adds a bit of a chorusy shimmer, almost a flutter, which has a highish rate, and lowish depth sound). But ive have had about zero luck in finding anything that will produce the same stand alone chorus sound without the delay.
I initially sold my boss ce-20 from ages ago because that was poo (to put it kindly), and read heaps of good stuff about the ibanez chorus reissue so i forked out and bought it. while its not too bad, it was total poo after distortion, and mildly alright before distortion (that sort of intermittent warble kind of sound Mr Wylde uses in his solos sometimes). and then while checking out if anything interesting was on ebay, i came across the tonerider chorus, which has awesome reviews, and i only picked it up for 48AUD, which is a steal in my opinion. Its got a very similar tone to the ibanez, but more pure and less noisy, but again I couldnt get the right chorusy tone i want with distortion. I think if it had a pot to control the level of the effect, i could dial in a good tone, but who knows.
So then I thought maybe its a digital chorus i need, like a boss ce-5, and that i need to move away from analog, but then thats just like the ce-20 i had before (or so i'm led to believe). So I did some more reading, and came across some guy recommending someone else to use a flanger on a high rate and low depth setting. Ive hated my high band flanger right from the start, and its been in storage for the last month, but decided to whack it onto my board with the distortion running into it and give this a try on high rate and low depth. it actually gave me the sort of subtle shimmery sound i was looking for, but still has a nasty hiss which i got with the ce-20, and a fake, modulated sound to it (can't really describe, but it sounds tacky).
obviously the most sensible thing for me to do is stop ebaying for the moment, and go into a guitar shop and try some choruses out, but uni exams are almost over, so this is something i'm going to have to treat myself to next week, for now i'm happy procrastinating on the forum.
so to get to the longwinded point...has anyone else had an issue similar to this and found a good solution to it, or better yet, what gives a very similar sound to the modulation setting on the dd7?
I must say, though, that the tonerider and ibanez choruses are really nice with a clean tone, but just dont give me the really subtle tone im after. Ive also tried the mxr micro chorus and the ehx small clone, but again these were a no go. and as a final point, i've had a quick brush over my itunes but no examples come to mind of the sound i'm looking for, and have no recording utilities at hand to preview the dd7 sound...
Thanks!
