What Delay should I go for?
« on: November 19, 2010, 10:50:45 PM »
Hi, good evening!

my current setup is:

guitar>RMC3 wah>Keeley Fuzzhead>Keeley Comp>Keeley Katana>Keeley truebypass looper> with an MXR phase 90 vintage reissue and the EHX Memory toy in the loop>amp

I could do with peoples help on what pedal to get, it has eventually come down to these pedals:

It's between the TC Nova Delay, TC Repeater delay, Boss DD-20, and Eventide Time factor...

what do you think?

I'm with Hunter. Strymon-pedals are amazing. The Brigadier is also a wonderful delay.  (and check out the blueSky-reverb as well, it is great!). I also like the Retrosonic Delay, all anolog pedal based on the DM2-circuit. It sounds very natural.

TC Nova Repeater. It's really cheap compared to all the features it has and it's great sounding too. I'll pick the Nova Repeater over the Nova Delay as it's easier to control as you don't have to fiddle around with a millisecond display.

interesting, thanks for the responses, I hadn't even heard of strymon, it nails that tape delay sound, very very musical, i love the fact it has reverb inside too, which makes it even more desirable...

so far the strymon is no 1

I have an old Ibanez AD9 (1981) and and quite old Boss DD2, but saving for ...so much... but also a Strymon. Not cheap, but great sounds.

I got the Nova Repeater and has also owned the T-Rex Replica. The Replica sounded really good, but didn't have much features and the tap tempo didn't work propperly hence I changed to the Repeater.

The Nova Repeater does an ok job imitating a tape echo to my ears.

Actually it's important to know if you use it up front or in the loop.

In the loop some amps work better with some pedals than others. My Providence is a top notch delay pedal, but in some amps it's overloading. I can compensate with a Ebtech Line Level Shifter, but it's losing some tone.

The Eventide can be switched between Line and Instrument levels, which is great.

If you wanna use it in the loop, I would order online via Thomann or so, where you can ship it back in case it doesn't harmonise with your setup.

I'm going to be using it in front of the amp, I use a clean but slightly overdiven amp sound, mostly on a Fender Champion 600 and live a vox with 2 channels the VR30 (an ac30 clone). However, I'll also be using it for re-amping in my recording studio to add stereo delay to things like synths and vocal tracks, even snare drums in dub style tracks so it needs to be really versitle ideally, I keep switching between the strymon and the TC nova, the TC has a beautifull modulated and clean delay that'd be good to add ambience to a track but the strymon has something magic about it, it's a lot more money I'll have to wait til they get more in stock and import it from the usa then pay custom costs etc, I dislike the way there is no presets on the strymon too and it can only do one thing....

lol this could take a while to choose!
