JCM 800 4 input
« on: November 22, 2010, 07:43:19 PM »
Anybody know anything about these?

an independent shop near me has an 1987 JCM 800. i've not seen one like this before though, it is non master volume and 4 input. he's asking £575 for it. As it's non MV i'm going to need to get it to a rehearsal room to try it properly and he said no problemm, has done it before.

Just want some info on the vibe of these amps, where they any good really? and if not, could they be a good candidate for modding?

he also has another early 80's super lead, at least it says so on the back. also no MV. any ideas on these also?

It's a 50W Super Lead.

These are good amps, but need to be cranked to get the best from them.

£575 is about the right money assuming it is all original.

Modding an amp will at best not devalue it, although extensive modification usually does.

Thanks, will have to go take another look because the guy said it was a 100 watter, will get a model number off it because the 1987 i stated was his response to the year, although i'm aware there's an 1987 model as well.

It is all original, and i know it came over from japan, having been exported out there years ago, one of the knobs isn't stock but the insides all are. there's one volume volume for each of the 2 high/low inputs.

The reason i'm looking at it is that i fancied a hot rodded marshall sound, and figured an older amp might be the way to go, I'm aware of the de valuation aspect, but £575 isn't a bad price for any valve amp as a basis for modding, so i'm comfortable with that aspect of it.

thanks again for the info

they're crackin amps to start off with, way gainier than you expect - great AC/DC tone out of them on around 6 (volume).

I rebuilt one of these when I was first tinkering with amps - made a turret board wiring it all up PTP.

For me personally, I think £500+ is a bit steep for one of these - nobody WANTS them as they're too new for the vintage crowd and the guys who want more gain won't get on with them.

I'd offer him £450 tops and be prepared to walk if they won't budge.

i sort of agree the HTH on the pricing here. i've been watching a few on the bay earlier in the year.

i'd whack a PPI master volume in there

ebay prices seem to have crept up again, £550 seems to be the going rate.

here's a nice '79 4-inputter for £550 (ex-Budgie)...  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Vintage-Marshall-JMP-50w-Head-ex-Bugie-/280589940599?pt=UK_MusicalInstr_Amplifiers_RL&hash=item415476b777#ht_841wt_1139

awesome guys thanks, i was starting to think this might not be the amp for me for modding as i'm not big on electronics and wasn't sure how easy adding a MV would be (as this was one of the things i wanted to do). but as it's here and in edinburgh i'm gona give it a try. If the core sound is there i'll look at getting it tweaked after.

want to get something done that'll get that west coast LA hot rod thing going on, in the SIR *39 style. really growly, gritty crunch c--ked wah type thing. tight thick bottom end, articulate highs etc

cough! cough! - I might, cough!, know someone who could do such mods, ahem!  (see my avatar)

I did an amp for Jonathon at Feline guitars with the #39 kinda thing going on - PM him, or maybe he'll chime in.

ah, now that's a good thing.. i didn't want to be shipping this off to the states for mods and didn't know anyone in the uk who did this kind of stuff.. excellent  :D

I won't be trying the amp out until after christmas as i work offshore and will be heading out in the next few days for a couple of weeks then a couple days off and working christmas and new years.. but i'll get it tried out and if i like it i'll be in touch about options and prices etc. the amps have sat in the place for the last 18 months so idon't think they'll go anywhere soon

cheers   :D

I've got one of these, sorry its a bit late, presumably this is the amp in question.

Mine is from 1988 and was formerly owned by Wishbone Ash.  1987 50 watt.  Sadly not had much chance to try it out properly, however it did sound good, I'm looking forward to trying it properly someday, everything is in a mess at the moment.  I'm debating whether to have a master volume installed on it sometime.

Last one I saw on eBay just under a month ago was something like just under £500, which was bought quickly.  I won't say how much I ended up getting mine for but it was more haha!
