When it comes to snow English are the biggest wussies ever ;-)

It's true, every year we have snow for about 3 days (maybe a week) and the whole country grinds to a halt like we've never seen it before.

I'm not saying much because people will throw stones on me...

But I'd love to live in a cold weather... People knows what is go on holidays at 40°C, with beach clothes and drinking cold beer or caipirinha...

Go work under the sun with long sleeves uniform under that sun and you'll know how Hell probably is...

And those saying the reverse:
hotness = you get naked and it's still hot...
coldness = put lots of clothes and you're warm and happy!

In England...

I get naked = IT GETS HOT! :P

I was just waiting for that, Dave

If it gets too bad here (which it probably won't) I'll probably just start (push) biking everywhere until the roads are no longer icy. Sliding bikes are much easier to control than cars and in some cases a bit of drift is usually pretty fun :) Snow cleans the tyres up really nice as well.

It's been snowing on and off most of this week here in Denmark and there's more to come this weekend :?

I'm about to get some winter tires for the car. Until then I really won't be driving much. Luckily some of my collegues have their cars fitted so I can ride with them as I got 65km. to work.

Last year was pretty bad.  I slipped over and fell on top of my 8 year old son...  He was very brave, but I'm a big bloke, and it must have hurt!

No snow in South Essex yet.  Frigging cold though!

Roo dude...

... Have you ever thought of MOVING?!

Have you worked out the cost of that bloody huge commute + the stress?  :?

Of course I have!

BUT, we like living in Oxford, I don't particularly want to move away from the band, my wife has a good job there which is a 5 min bike ride away, we've just about finished our house (almost everything needed doing), so would like to enjoy it now... the list goes on.

Plus houses in Oxford, while expensive, are cheap compared with Sutton! I would still have to commute into central london 3+ days a week for the lab-based part of my job anyway...
There is no ideal solution :(

So the snow finally hit London today.  About an inch of it.... maybe two, to be generous.

And, as predicted, everything fell to pieces.  To be fair, the underground network was OK, but the trains.... you'd think we were in Siberia.

It's not been too bad in my area but some of the guys I work with left site at 3 o clock in the afternoon just in case the traffic hit, but they were still in the van 5 hours later stuck at Dartford Crossing (from Borehamwood to Sheerness), things do get rather stupid when snow hits.

Amazingly, my employers told me to leave early and I am glad I did as the snow got bad and a friend just called me after taking 4 hours to get home on more or less the same route I took. My journey took an hour- normally it is 45 minutes. Snowing tonight though not so bad but where y office is I gather it is bad so tomorrow should be fun.

In the 1970s and 80s/90s 3-4 inches of snow didn't cause the railways, roads and buses to completely fail and fall apart

What has changed?

I dunno, I think it was just as bad in the '90s.  In the 20 years that I've lived in London the transport system has always collapsed whenever it's snowed.

I can't comment on the '70s or '80s!   :)
