fitting aftermath pickups in a ibanez rg7321 7 string??
« on: November 26, 2010, 02:54:31 PM »
hey, forgive my utter noviceness in this area, but i've decided to finally change up my stock pickups in my ibanez rg7321 7 string. i'm pretty set on getting an aftermath for the bridge for starters, but just wanted to know 1. will it require any or much rounting 2. what you would advise me needing with regards to changing pots, 2 or 4 conductor etc etc and anything else i might need or need to know??!!! again excuse me for being clueless :(

It shouldnt need any routing as the 7321 is passive also the pots, switches & jack will all be fine too.

if you have a 5 way switch and want splits or parallel switching then you need 4 conductor i have the ibanez wiring diagram for this.

If its onlya  3 way you only need 2 con but 4 is always better for if you decide you want extra options later.

also you will need short leg pickups for it.

I have an aftermath in a basswood ibanez and it absolutely slays i imagine you will really enjoy it

Be aware that you might need to order the neck pickup with reverse magnetic polarity for the switching to work the same as the Ibanez - worth checking on yours first which way round the poles are (south vs north in which coil)
If coil nearest bridge is the same polarity as that nearest the neck , then no problems
Otherwise you will want the magnet reversed in the neck Aftermath

Cheers for the feedback guys, but due to my lack of knowledge i'm abit confused!!  :?

i'm just going to fit an aftermath in the bridge and leave the neck pickup as stock (mainly because i can only afford the one pickup and very rarely use the neck!!) so when ordering what will i need? plus how do i check the poles??

my rg7321 has a five way selector so i understand that I need the 4 way conductor but when it comes to which way the magnets need to be... i'm lost!

if i'm only getting a pickup for the bridge, will it be fine to just order the aftermath in the bridge configuration and worry about the poles etc if or when i order a neck???

again forgive me for my lack of knowledge i've only ever played guitar and know little about the tech side!!!

If you are only getting the bridge then you just need to order 4 conductor short leg

then any custom covers etc.

If you check the posts in the tech section i have posted an ibanez 5 way for BKP diagram i found it on sevenstring.org

I'd been looking at this and noticed that the schematics are already on the site. It's here: http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/main/downloads/schematics/general/humbuckers/2_hum__ibanez_style_5_way_switch__1vol_1tone_.pdf

It's probably the same as the one posted above but I found this extra useful when installing my pickups in my RG7321

Hi,

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I recently bought a set of Nailbombs for my Ibanez RG2620, and was looking for some advice.

Firstly, I've just got the stock polarity, not realising that the original neck pickup has this reversed. If I wire as per the diagram(s) above (i.e. just do a straight replace of the stock pickups), what effect will this have? My understanding is that I'll simply lose hum-cancelling on the "inner-coils" position. It should otherwise sound the same...

An alternative to this might be to reverse the orientation of the neck Nailbomb so that the screw poles face the bridge, thus reversing the poles. Or I could alter the switching so that the bridge-most/slug coil of the neck gets voiced with the bridge-most/screw coil of the bridge pickup. Will either of those work, or am I running into potential out-of-phase problems?

I'm also going to have to do a bit of routing on the RG to fit the Nailbombs. In particular, the screw poles stick a long way clear of the base-plate, so I'll need to drill some holes in the bottom of each rout to accommodate this. Does anyone have any advice/experience on that? I don't want to go drilling straight through to the spring cavity, or to accidentally run into the trem-claw screws!

Cheers,
Si

I believe if you send the neck pickup back Tim will change the magnet around for you.

however i do believe that you will just use hum cancelling.

Which to me wouldnt be a huge deal as i only use that position for cleans so there would be no hum anyway.

As to your other questions i have no idea

I think you're thinking along the right lines, I was going to try this on my Mira but never got round to it.  If you physically turn round the neck pickup and swap around the connections of the red and black wires, then in the "inner coils" position you'll have slug coil of the bridge plus screw coil of the neck, therefore hum-cancelling.

I'm not sure what happens in position 3, the both-humbuckers-together setting; it might turn out to be out of phase.

Thanks guys,

I think I'm going to go with the standard wiring for now, as per the diagram linked to above. As you've said Toe-Knee, I tend to use the inner-coil position mainly for sparkly clean stuff, so hum's not going to be as much of an issue as it would be with a lead setting.

Philly Q: I think you could well be right about the out-of-phase issue. I think there may be other wiring options that may avoid this, but could be difficult to implement without fitting a 4-pole super-switch.

Cheers,
Si

Hi everyone, I ordered an Aftermath that I plan to put in the bridge position of my RG7321, replacing the stock pickups. Also, I plan on replacing the neck pickup with a Liquifire. Do I need to worry about any reverse magnetic polarity, out of phase or hum canceling issues?

Thanks.
