Need some Machine Head advice.
« on: November 26, 2010, 10:18:51 PM »
I have a 1970's/1980's shergold masquerader.

Its in need of a new nut and new machine heads. Trouble is the machine heads are different from modern guitars.

These look like the only one that have the same screw position.

http://www.allparts.uk.com/online-shop/allparts-guitar-amp-parts/tuning-keys/guitar/3-x-3-tuning-keys/economy-tuning-keys-w-diagonal-mounting-holes-3x3-p-1565.html

as you can see they have a diagonal screw position.

Are these machine heads any good. They are called economy tuners and they are only £15. Sounds like cheapies.

Will any others fit or am I gonna have to get the drill out? :chain:

Cheers all.

tbh, I would't touch those tuners even if they paid me.  Maybe I'm just spoiled on nice tuners, but the covered "economy" tuners have never worked properly for me.

Do you have any pics of the old tuners?  It'd be easier to suggest upgrades with original pics.
I'm not good enough, technically, to be a classic musician. I lack discipline.

i have found grover tuners in the past that have the lower left screw and it will be plenty secure enough with one screw only.

I certainly wouldn't get those Allparts "economy" ones, they're rubbish.  Not worth buying at any price.

I think you might have trouble getting a decent quality match for the existing tuners.  Could be worth biting the bullet and drilling some new holes!
