which floyd rose to get?
« on: November 27, 2010, 10:58:08 PM »
ok, I need a new floyd rose and I'm not up for spending £100+ on a Gotoh, Schaller or OFR.

I'm therefore left with the option of...

* Floyd Rose Special (£50.00 on ebay)
* Floyd Rose II (£32.00 on ebay)

Which would you go for and why? - I'm ok to spend £50.00 on one, but only if its a better trem and worth the extra £20.00

Anyone?

who builds them? Well, the best advice I can give is: the BEST FR bridge still won't be perfect... The equalizing strenghts of springs and strings will be always a little troublesome...

If I'm speak garbage I'm sorry, the blood pressure is a little down and am pissed for spending R$350 with veterinarian and cabs for the cat, not counting the remedy...

Can't remember which of the two floyds was on my mexican sambora strat, but it felt very sturdy, think it was the special

I've got the 1000 series on my Mockingbird (its OEM only) and I'm led to believe that it sits between the special and ofr in terms of quality - works fine and I've got no qualms with it, but the 1000 series are £100 - might as well get a Gotoh for that kind of cash.

The specials are OK. They still have wobble in the arm, and don't really have the "feel", but much better than anything in that $ range. Best Floyd I've ever used is the Kahler Killer. Has ZERO arm wobble and has the lowest profile ever. Plus, the posts are backwards on these things. The knifeedge is on the post, which is really just a large machine screw. You never have to file your edges down, just go spend a few coins at the hardware store. Found two NOS a few months back. Just perfect too. $100 for both. Did I mention you can "whammy" the individual strings?

I like floyd-style Kahlers, but they're tough to find.

As it happens I'm now sorted - got an 80s Floyd off a Kramer for £70 shipped.

what I would also like to find is the trem that floyd rose made for Les Pauls (see pic attached).  didn't require any routing, so fully reversible.

That Les Paul Floyd up there is what you get when a Floyd and a Kahler(cam) make love while Schaller videotapes it.

would love to get my hands on one - if anyone has one or sees one for sale, let me know please.

I know Kahler do something similar, but it requires some routing and that ain't an option.

Speakin of fulcrum Kahler's... They are coming out with new ones. I had a little e-mail conversation with the dude that owns Whammiworld and then e-mailed Kahler to confirm. They won't send me any pics, but it's coming out at NAMM and you can use either knife edges OR ball bearings. Whammiworld guy described it like 6 jet engines on a fulcrum base. I'm stoked for these.
