Which overdrive pedal...?
« on: November 29, 2010, 02:56:56 AM »
Hey guys
I'm looking for a new overdrive pedal, I'm currently using a Digitech Bad Monkey
It's a good pedal for the price but a bit to jagged sounding.

I was looking at the Maxon OD808 or the Fulltone OCD since I heard they
Are pretty smooth sounding... anyone try these pedals?

Get a Maxon 820 or 808. The OCD sucks.

You can hear clips of the 820 and a few other drives at my blog, HERE http://ampsnthings.com/?p=51

The 820 is very much an industry standard boost and OD. Prized for the extra push it can give without imparting much colouration.

Found on a millionandone metal records, as it happens, on top of the high gain amps for the clarity and punch you can get out it

:D :D I call it the other way around!
It depends on the amp and what you play.
I think the OCD is great for single note stuff but I'd probably stay away from it if I played metal

Klon(e). First OD I've genuinely liked. One of the few pedals that actually lives up to the hype.

I second that about the Klon(e) - I've tried loads of overdrives and it's the only one I really love... (quite like versions of the MXR distortion+ though....)

good luck getting one though.. second hand love pedal eternities go for manageable prices, and the new love pedal kalamazoo is supposed to be a klon killer at a fraction of the price.

good old tubescreamers are great if you like what they do (the OCD is supposedly an improved TS type), and i'm quite enthusiastic about sobbat at the minute having ordered a DB1. sounds like the DB2 is a general OD, the DB1 and DB3 being tuned for SC's and HB respectively. and reasonably inexpensive too

there's one called a rockbox boiling point but i think it may be more in the range of higer gain od into light to mid gain distortion, if that makes sense? videos are impressive.

The Klon was alright, replaced it with the KOT though. Each are built for different players :\
Also 808, ts9, and any of the sort are glorious and easily become lifetime connections :D

Any of you try the Koko Boost?

C-pig, C-Diver, Holydiver, Miracle man, Sinner, Trilogy, Slowhand.

The Brunetti Mercury Box is amazing. Also consider the Xotic BB Preamp. An yes, the Maxon 820 is a classic. Very nice pedal. Outsider tip: the Emma Reezafratzitz (handmade in Denmark), will do anything from light crunch to fat overdrive. Tones stay for days. Lot of gain on tap, but never mushy. Very dynamic pedal. The Suhr Shiba Drive is another great pedal. Not cheap, but sounds very nice. I have the Suhr Riot Distortion and it's great, especially on the clean channel.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

Hi. I'm a bit of an o/d pedal nut, and I've got a klon, a providence sov-2, a tubescreamer (maxon version, od9) and a carl martin hot drive/boost. The one to go for depends on what you want it to do - the klon has the best "clean" boost sound and will make an already good sounding guitar/amp combination sound bigger and fatter. It can sound a bit too mid rangey with some humbuckers if you're not careful. The tubescreamer will always sound like a tubescreamer, it's great if you want that srv sound, but it's always recognisable as a tubescreamer. My current fave is the providence - awesome sound, very smooth sounding, the clean boost almost as good as the klon. Only got it a couple of days ago, so it hasn't been gigged yet but so far has sounded good with every guitar I've tried it with. It's used by robben ford and matt schofield.

Hope thats helpful!

Try out the MI Audio Blue Boy Deluxe, or the Tube Zone. Both are very similar, but the Tube Zone allows for more gain. I've got the Tube Zone, and I can't live without it.

I would note that although this is basically a tube screamer, it doesn't have the usual mid-hump.  That was a minus point for my mate who' selling it, but for many people it'll be exactly what they're after.

hey turkey!what kind of music/guitar/amp?  this info would help, otherwise you may get a bunch of fanboys raving about the ones they own/ or a few haters who trash the ones they played for only  a few minutes...for ex., my fulldrive II is purrfect for my tele/boogie electradyne+2x12 65w celestions=blues rock and twang...but it wouldn't quite fit a "metalhead" 8)
