New Cab Day
« on: November 30, 2010, 10:34:34 PM »
Hey guys.

Just thought I'd do a quick post about a new cab I got today.

It's a Zilla Cabs (http://www.zillacabs.com) Fat Boy 2x12 with Vintage 30s.

I was going to go for 1 of Martins after talking to him many times about it, but after talking to him at the recent BKP meet he said he had a very long waiting list so it may be worth looking elsewhere. Good of him to say that :)

Compared to the Marshall 1936 beneath it the Zilla is about 2 or 3 inches deeper, but is about 4 or 5 inches shorter. I have no idea how this will impact the tone, but as alot of people seem to think Marshall 1936 cabs are among the worst made, I'll see how I go.

It's nice and simple, wired for 16Ohms Mono and that's it!

All of the cosmetics of his cabs can be customised but I went for a standard black 'Bronco' covering like that on MESA/Splawn amps and a basic Basketweave covering.

I'm not overly picky when it comes to the looks of cabs, so I went for something basic that'd go with anything.

Due to being back from work late (bloody snow!) I haven't had chance to try it with anything but my Smokie amp yet, so I'll update the thread after I've used it with my Quick Rod etc.

Finally managed to give the cab a quick blast today.

I was using my Splawn Quick Rod with my Gibby LP with Bareknuckle Mules and my BC Rich Gunslinger with Super D/Dual Rail (closest guitars to hand) straight into the amp.

I had all the EQ settings at around noon, and had gain at a bit over 12 o clock on all 3 'gears' on the Overdrive channel. Even with gain up higher it's not a 'bt00talz' style amp, more vintage voiced high gain. It's a very clear and dry sounding amp with very clear note definition, so it doesn't cover up any mistakes. Some people think it's a difficult amp to play, but I really like it so far which is weird because I'm not the cleanest of players! :D

I'm not sure if it was the different cab or the different speakers (V30s in the new cab Vs G12-75s in the old cab) but the cleans just generally sounded 'better'; fuller, less boomy with smoother highs. This pretty much carried over onto the Overdrive channels and it's various modes.

Before I decided on these speakers I'd heard alot of mixed reviews of them, most people saying they're overly bright and shrill, and most Splawn owners seem to absolutely hate them but so far they're working for me.

This may all change when I finally get the cab to a band practice, but that's my 1st impression.

I did't miss it. ;)

Anyway here's what postie brought me.

It's a Studio Pro covered in Western Tan with basket-weave cloth. It's unloaded at the moment as I'm going to procrastinate over what to put in it. Whatever goes in it they'll need to cope with that monster sitting on top of it. I may start another thread about speakers. It's an ex-demo cab so if you've been to a guitar show recently you may have seen this cab.

As for calendars, I've got one from these people on my wall and I'm not showing you! http://www.wolford.com/207.html?&s=1

G12K-100 and an EVM 12L black label :)

Okay the EVM is a bit expensive, but the G12K-100 is a STONKING speaker, and it's also cheap! It's got such a good grind and punch to it.

:)
