Not so sure about special editions and collectibles...
« on: December 01, 2010, 09:11:40 PM »
Especially when it comes to anniversary series amps and limited edition guitars

i know i'm singling this out, but there's lots of other culprits out there

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Marshall-30th-Anniversary-Combo-Amp-and-Speaker-Cabinet-/300499152058?pt=UK_MusicalInstr_Access_RL&hash=item45f7252cba

I'm sorry, but i just don't think this amp is worth that money, or a collectors piece, purple or not.

I owned one of the heads back in the 90's and i had that and a 412 cab new for much less money.

as a marshall it was fine i guess, i was all nuts about it at the time as it was my first "proper amp". had worked all summer to save the money for it and i got it for christmas. but time is great for making you more objective and i guess looking back this amp just felt a little tame. it didn't scream like i wanted it to, even in rehearsal rooms where i could crank it. not like the guys who i was listening to at the time.

yeah, but i can't figure out what the demand is for? it's a ninties 3 channel marshall, granted that at the time was unique, but who's crying out for these things so bad that the guy thinks he can get 1700 quid for it?

I mean, totally fair play if he does and many grats his way.

it just seems to me sometimes (as i said above there's many examples of it) that if something is a finished in a different way and given the title "special edition" or "anniversary" the attempted resale values get a bit silly.

mine was a black tolex one, and yes it was more expensive than a JCM 900, but not massively for the extra 3 channels. 1300 i think i paid for head and 4x12.

just don't get how this relatively unobtrusive amp goes for this price 15 years later

maybe someone wants to buy it i suppose

Its just a combo version of the 6100 isnt it?

I love the sound of the 6100

And people are after them because they're awesome do everything a JVM does but better (with one less channel)

BUT the 6100 goes a lot cheaper than that usually about 5-600 on ebay

yeah it is, they did a purple tolex and black tolex version, but all were 30 anniversary amps.

you think? maybe i need to go back and have another listen to these, but i had a tsl 601 right after i had this and thought it has a better amp. you would think that the JVM would have been a step up from a TSL?

I have a TSL601 now and love it. But when i tried a 6100 it sounded pretty identical to the TSL but with more bite pretty much like the JVM is

I love the JVM though im not knocking it it's a cracking amp but if i were to replace the TSL id either go with the 6100 first if i could find a reasonably priced one then the JVM

Maybe the 6100 i tried was modded or had really high output valves in though you never know these days

Just looked on the marshall page and they have made a few changes to the amp

adding built in footswitchable boosts etc

I agree though the price is a bit high its pushing into splawn territory

right, having listened to that i think i like the JVM better, it's bloody close and it's really a preference thing, but it think the JVM sounds a little more organic and open maybe less compressed, certainly in the OD's and crunch channels, and the clean sounds are a little wamer, and generally less compressed overall. the 6100 is a little tighter and hairier maybe. with the lead channels i think the JVM had more balls and growl.

but this is just subjective as what i prefer is not the same as what someone else will. neither of them sound bad

i still think 1700 quid is a lot of money for a 6100 though lol

my mate had a half stack in purple, managed to sell it for about half that price here after a few price drops, but pretty small market down here
i thought it was a cool amp, wasnt blown away by it though, really liked the 2nd channel but thought the lead tone was a bit thin sounding, i prefered the 5150 i had at the time
was before i knew much about gear, so never tried it with a boost, coulda been pretty good with the 2nd channel i reckon.
