what is the deal with the BKP CTS 550k pots?

Well, they're made to closer tolerances than your average CTS pots, so you are guaranteed 500kΩ minimum. Additionally the taper is designed to be particularly smooth and usable across the whole range of travel.
The slightly higher Ω mean that you should notice a slightly clearer, brighter tone than usual.
