I really love the tone of singles, though they do need more work to sound good with decent gain levels.
For me, the easiest type to get a good distorted tone is the telecaster bridge. P90s can sound quite bass heavy, and strats can sound brittle and too bright. But of course you can get them all sounding good :)
The benefits are a tonne of cut, and raunchy tone. They also clean up better, i think, with the volume control. I find that especially neck humbuckers can get lost in a live situation.
To be honest I'm liking minihumbuckers or firebird mini-hbs as a good middleground.
Recently I'm embracing the strat way :)
