Tele Vintage wiring
« on: December 06, 2010, 09:38:13 PM »

So I've just wired my Tele with the tone control going through the middle lug of the volume pot to combat the HF loss when turning down.

It sounds much better but the pot tapers have gone mental, the volume drops very quickly and when the tone pot is at 50% or less the volume becomes almost on or off.

Is this normal with this type of wiring?

I've also rewired "gibson 50s style", and while there are indeed some interactions between volume and tone pot, I don't have any of the extreme side-effects you mention - I'd even say it made the volume pot taper smoother and more manageable. The pots are the stock ones (japanese mini-pots, 250Ko audio taper), but this wiring works fine too on both my Vox Custom 24 (LP-like, CTS 500Ko audio pots) and Standard 25 (strat-like, stock japanese 250Ko pots).

Could check what kind of pots you have and post a drawing of your wiring ?

Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

The pots are CTS I think, unfortunately there is solder on the back so I can't read exactly what type.
It's a stadard BKP wired harness, I have just simply moved the tone control to the middle lug of the volume.

I'll try and post a photo when I get home.

I've currenly gone back to modern wiring with a 680pf treble bleed cap which sounds okay but need to have a proper check of it.

So that should be CTS 250Ko audio taper pots.

FWIW here's what I did:

standard wiring:

50s style wiring:
